Blues Across The Mersey

In an era when you pay £20 to get in to Roots Hall, the idea of a whole weekend away for less than a tenner seems difficult to envisage .

However, that's what you got in the 1970s if you were in with the Brothers Grimm Travel Club! In our latest article about life as a Southend United fan in the days when men were men and a pint cost half a farthing (maybe), Billy Best's Boot Laces takes us back to an away trip to Merseyside, when the travelling support took on games at both Prenton Park and Goodison. Read on....

Apathy reigns at Roots Hall

The 2007/08 regular season drew to a close last weekend with Southend United hosting Port Vale. Given that both sides already had their fate decided - play-offs for the Shrimpers and relegation for the Valiants - it was no surprise that the Roots Hall clash was something of a damp squib. As ever, fbm was there to report from the game, one which saw a few of Southend's key individuals rested for the battles ahead.

Ooh to be a Shrimper!

We're really at the business end of the season now and it's at time like this when the team really needs our support. One person who doesn't need telling this is Hawkwell Blue who has written a piece for SZ.com about what it means to him to follow Southend United, and how he loves sticking it to the part time Premier League fans who only see their teams on the tv. In fact, on the night Manchester United - a team yet to even score against Southend United - reach the European Cup Final, this piece has particular resonance.

Brighton Rocked

Southend United recorded their fourth straight win as they all but cemented a place in the play offs following another scintillating performance at Roots Hall tonight.

Brighton – no mugs by any means – were simply swept aside and Blues yet again should have recorded a victory by a far bigger margin.

As ever, fbm was on hand at Roots Hall to bring us his report...

Bailey Strike Spares Blues

Another powerhouse display by Nicky Bailey saw him notch his 10th goal of the season to ensure Blues left a windy Whaddon Road with a point on Friday night – but in truth as a display it was fairly tame stuff and Southend have got to be looking to beat sides like Cheltenham if they have designs to do anything at all in this league. The game itself was instantly forgettable so I’ll pad the report out with something a little more interesting and amusing.

Down Memory Lane

With a Wembley outing hopefully in store later this month, not to mention at least two live TV appearances, most Southend United fans are understandably looking ahead. But a quick look back can't hurt either.
In the latest in our 'Down Memory Lane' series, canveyshrimper regales us with some tales from the 1968/69 season, when the likes of Billy Best, John Kurila, Gary Moore and Phil Chisnall were wearing the sacred navy blue shirt. Highly unlikely, but if you happen to be a fan of King's Lynn or Brentwood Town, probably best not to read on....

Play-offs beckon for Blues

Any slim chance Southend United may have harboured of automatic promotion slipped away this afternoon as a strong and hard-working Northampton side restricted Blues to a point.

In fairness, it was probably a just result although Blues certainly had much the better of the second half and made enough chances to have won comfortably

Once again, fbm was our man casting a keen eye on proceedings at Roots Hall, and he shares his views with us here ...

Southend Win Ugly vs Hatters

At the end of what has been a momentous week in the history of Southend United, the anticipated euphoric atmosphere and landslide victory both failed to materialise as Blues “won ugly” against a Luton side who were not only low on confidence but also probably the worst team to visit the Hall this season.

As usual, fbm was on hand to report from Roots Hall.

Blues Scrape Past Cherries

Southend rode their luck today in a fairly drab encounter at Roots Hall and emerged victorious against lowly Bournemouth to claim their first “double” of the season.

In truth both sides could have done with shooting practice as the match could have easily ended 6-6 in a game that was noticeable only for some fairly poor defending.
