Question 247.tv

RHB

Return to Modnomor Mountain⭐⭐🦐

It seems that 247.tv is the platform for NL Streaming, so yesterday I didn't know what to expect from steaming the Yeovil game without the NL overcoat. As it turned out I had a chunk of audio echo problems at first, cured by a re-launch of the stream, then I had the obligatory buffering issues and the occasional picture freeze, but after that, not to bad.

Am I getting value for money from the NL and this lot when I don't go to a game in person? I'm not too sure, but it certainly saved me a lot of wear and tear on the old bod and quite a bit of cash by staying at home (180 mile drive there and back).

So (sorry, @Chrisb) what was your experience yesterday, and can we do anything to improve it as a supporters group?

Appalling. From one-sided commentary, to regular screen freezing and needing to completely reload the whole site, or the 1980s website design with poor navigation and an inability to keep you logged in if you need to reload the site (yet again)… and of course missing a big chunk of the sound in the second half.

Honestly, a 12 year old hobbyist using Dad’s minicam could have done far better. Oh, and somebody please get Aunt Helga to sort out the website for gawd’s sake.

1994 called, they want their website back...

Its just a mickey mouse service run by amateurs. No standardization. Reliant on random blokes called jeff to finish their half time burger have a slash in time to point the camera at the ceiling and forget to plug the audio in.

Fwiw the £7 price point was better. Maybe a fiver should be better as theres a %50 chance it will work ok.

Pretty awful service as always, but I’d rather that than not being able to see the games at all (I personally wouldn’t make the journey our fantastic support did yesterday for an FA cup prelim tie!)

Sounds like the BBC commentary recently. Yesterday was prime example leading to kick off

Very Poor

Lost sound for beginning of 2nd half, when they remembered to restart the feed

Panning too fast at times to be able to see anything

Very poor "commentary" with frequent silence whilst getting updates from other matches

Won't be doing this again

Not sure how you expect premium non-bias commentary or high quality streaming from a National League South club?

The only club that had decent streaming in the national league was Wrexham. That’s because they pushed for it and had the American interest. Every other club is pushing this out for the cheapest price possible to meet the contract obligations to get their slice of the money.

Nobody has said anything like that, and we’re all as aware of the context as you are.

However, if you pay to stream a football match you should always have a right to expect that: 1) you can see it; 2) you can hear it.

Beyond that, commentators who are aware that both sets of fans are listening, and who make even 5 minutes effort to prep how to say the players names isn’t too much to ask either.

On the website, when for only a few pounds you can knock up a usable and logical web page in 5 minutes with only a few clicks… then it is also reasonable to criticise the total lack of effort on that front.

So the sarky comments really aren’t needed, called for or even valid.

I like the fact that, even at our temporary level 5 status, it's possible to watch a live stream of games that I can't get to but the quality is pretty poor really. The picture is blurry especially when following a long ball and the commentary and frequent buffering are annoying. Do I expect more for the money? Maybe but I do wonder how many people actually use the service and whether it's worth while financially for the clubs and the streaming company.
It's better than nothing but needs improvement if it's to be a less frustrating experience.

I have streamed all the recent Tuesday fixtures and have had no problem with NLTV, unlike last season when there were frequent issues.

Yesterday, 247.tv was problematic from the start, initially buffering every 10 seconds and then at longer intervals throughout the match. The first Yeovil goal was scored while the stream was buffering so I didn’t see it and only knew we had gone behind because it sprang back to life with the exclamation of delight from commentator Sheridan Robins. I don’t know why, but the buffering frequently coincided with us having a corner such that I didn’t get to see the corner taken and when the stream resumed each time the Yeovil keeper was taking a goal kick. I gathered from that our corners were pretty woeful, as is often the case. Something happened during the half time interval that looked as though the camera had been knocked off its tripod and when it was ultimately corrected 5-6 minutes of the second half had already been played and the commentary did not resume until about midway through the second half. All in all, it wasn’t a good streaming/watching experience, but, as @LeedsSUFC has pointed out, expectations should not be too high when clubs are responsible for providing the service and it is better than nothing if you are unable to attend the match.

As for the commentary, well, it was bound to be biased. Sheridan is a lifelong supporter of Yeovil and her dad is a director of the club. The summariser/co-commentator, Gary Owers, is Head of Player Development for the NL and his son, Josh, was in the Yeovil team yesterday. Their bias was probably no worse than Nick Alliker is for us when he is commentating on BBC Essex. As an aside, I hope Kev managed to have a word or two with Gary Owers to let him know his feelings about the way the NL are disregarding player welfare in respect of our circumstances.

Quite agree, for £7 I thought it was worth it, you get what you pay for. Do the clubs at this level have the money to invest in decent equipment to produce what a lot of people want, I doubt it. That is one of the reasons why they are not in Southend's situation, the expenditure is not worth it for the income generated. One plus is the log in and selection of game was very, very easy.

Except most of the things mentioned cost very little money, or none at all over and above what will already have been spent (possible exception of the website, but even then…).

I thought the commentary was ok and substantially better than many I have heard on these platforms…we are lucky with the standard of ours and dare I say feel some of the comments on here…ie reference to squawking..are just from the anyone except a woman brigade!

Irrespective of what is charged if you advertise and promote a service then you should deliver that said service.I didn't bother yesterday as I have been caught before on numerous occasions by the poor quality being delivered.Have complained numerous times with little affect. So I have voted with my feet and just listen to radio commentary instead which is far more reliable.Until they improve I not bothering with the Mickey mouse service

My first experience of this service, having used the NL streaming one without too many issues several times. Have to say the picture quality was poor - very jerky, enough to give you a headache. The commentary was dreadful - the bloke sounded like Phil Brown, which was weird, and both were incredibly biased, particularly the woman. She got several things totally wrong in the 1st half, which her colleague did pull her on, but by the 2nd half, it didn't matter what Southend did, because everything Yeovil did was fantastic - even hoofing the ball miles.

2nd half we lost for quarter of an hour entirely, picture just froze.

I've seen and heard some poor stuff this season - and some excellent - but that was right up there with the worst for both picture quality and commentary.

For what it's worth I think the streaming company have to put up with whatever the home team club decide to field, and we have experienced some very dodgy commentators whatever the gender and or age. In fact the overly enthusiastic schoolboy from last season was probably one of the most amusing commentaries I heard. So the streaming co is not covering itself in glory, but it is giving me a viewing option which I wouldn't otherwise have.

I reckon it's down to us now to get out of this division this season so that we can welcome back iFollow, which, if I recall, we used to slag off unmercifully.

Said it before, just put the bbc essex commentary on and mute the away commentary, takes about a minute of pausing one or the other to get it in sync.

I dont expect studio quality tv. I do expect them to turn the camera on tho....

And call me old school, but if it was my job to commentate id prep for at least 10 minutes so i got the pronunciation of names right. How hard can that be....
