National League and Transfer Embargoes

A popular topic of conversation and one that will no doubt crop up a few times this season.

FWIW Chris Phillips recently stated that the club was not currently under an embargo

This article may be of interest. It's from a few years ago but the bit about needing to submit a budget, that the fact of a club being under one is confidential (meaning Chris Phillips presumably has no way of verifying if someone is telling him porkies). With a few changes it could easily be one of Ron's missives

"The league correctly imposes these sanctions to look after its clubs and encourage sides to spend within their means or at least have a clear budget structure planned and outlined from the beginning of the season."

I'm sure that won't have caused any issues - we did after all manage to file our 2018-19 accounts by 2nd August 2021, so we're on top of such things.

Still, some eyebrows (not those one) may be raised at how come a club who isn't embargoed were unable to register Lewis Gard, Miles Mitchell-Nelson and Eren Kinali for Wednesday's night Premier League Cup game, but I'm sure there is an innocent explanation.

Ricky Holmes' on-off transfer has also attracted speculation as to why Ron hasn't sanctioned it when he's seemingly sanctioned every other crock (and for that matter, crook) we've signed the past 5 or so years.

Announcing a player joining on loan who has been training with us for over a month and played in six out of seven friendlies when their loan deal is still subject to FA clearance seems more a case of curious timing - rather like when Akinola was finally announced last season - everyone knew that was a deal done some weeks earlier, but an unfortunate injury kept him out until Sam Hart was also able to join. I'm sure FA clearance is a formality but why announce the signing now and not just wait for the formality of FA clearance to be received? It's not the language used when announcing other loan signings like Olayinka, Sterling and Hackett-Fairchild last season. It was however used to describe Jordan Green's signing in August when the club was under embargo (subject to EFL and FA approval in that instance). Fortunately if there is any ****-up over fielding a wrongly registered player again we're not subject to a suspended points penalty - we've been relegated out of the Football League's jurisdiction and it was the late payment of wages for which we received the suspended points deduction, not the fielding of an ineligible player and that penalty is now served (talking of penalties - what was the outcome into the FL investigation into calling off the Cambridge game?).

Thanks for this Yorkie, cheered me up no end just in time for the weekend.

Well anyway we are not subject to an embargo. If we were then it would have been one of the shortest ever spanning the short distance between signing Dalby and Dennis.

However, boy is your glass perpetually half empty :-)

Didn't you claim last season that we weren't under an embargo when in fact it we were?

The details of how an embargo operates under National League rules are in an appendix which is not available on the internet, so any claims about this need to be questioned. We may well be under an embargo if it is similar to the EFL definition, eg we can sign loanees but not pay transfer fees. Wheras the EFL changed the rules and did away with the confidentiality condition at their last meeting in June it is not clear that the Natiional League did the same so any insider knowledge claims need to be taken with a large pinch of salt. We know Martin likes sailing close to the wind and it may well be that unpaid tax will result in yet another winding up order which will result in an embargo, if that has not already happened.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Dennis was here on trial to see if it fitted for us, the player and Norwich's expectations so I don't see the delay in announcing his signing as unusual.

The RH saga shows that Ron has learned from his past mistakes about signing players with injury problems.

The old addage of there is no smoke without fire is often true although this time I suspect the smoke is from the cataracts some fans view the the club through.

We aren't under an embargo, we have made some very good signings and improved our squad, we even got business done early so I'm not surprised things went quiet for a while. After all as you have said we need to work within our declared budget, which we appear to be doing very capably.

Dennis took a while to get over the line due to talks between both clubs and player .The waiting for Fa clearance is common Lots of clubs either sign or loan players that are subject to FA clearance . So there is no embargo or problems with the fa .

If we aren't under an embargo, how come we weren't able to register Lewis Gard for last Wednesday?

I'm also curious what is going on with Kargbo. The move has clearly been agreed as like Dennis he's been training with us for all pre-season but nothing has been announced yet. Now maybe Ron is holding off making it official to save on a week's wages but why announce the Dennis loan but not the Kargbo one? Why was the Dennis announcement rushed through before it was finalised?

It's not so much cataracts but lenses of experience.

Its quite simple really, If we could have got someone better/more experienced as a target man then we would have. But with 5 days to go it looks like Kargbo.

Yes lets listen to those with no inside information but spend their lives hating all things SUFC.

I have a feeling, and it is only a feeling, that you're wrong this time. Even if you are, you have every right to ask questions because (to link both) your experience has given you well justified cataracts.

If Dennis doesn't play on Saturday, I'm calling it now.

EMBARGO!

However, is our team good enough to get a decent start to the season ? Yes
The contrast in this thread between evidence-based analysis of why we may be in an embargo versus your gut-feel shouting is quite enjoyable.
