Prague, do's and don'ts?

SUFC-punks

Newbie
heading to prague at the end of april (hopefully to celebrate the lads staying up!!) not been b4 and just wondered if anyone can recommend stuff that's a must do or anything that should be avoided like the plague!! ta muchly.

I went there last year with about 15 mates for a stag-do after hearing rave reviews about the place and we all came back thinking it was very over-rated. Havent got any real major advice to offer above and beyond the normal comman sense when going away; just be prepared to be offered drugs & prozzy's everywhere you go and prepare for paying a arm and leg for a beer in the city centre where you can get it for about 75p a pint around the outskirts

do's - everything
don't - feel like you have to lie in bed all day... it's a beautiful city with lots to see and admire. If you haven't got accomodation sorted then i would recommend http://unitas.prague-hostels.cz/

also... if one of the hawkers for the strip clubs asks "do you want to see a monkey sh*g a midget"... don't go cos its a trick to get you to pay loads and there isnt and midget sh*gging

i don't know where you went boozing but we definitely didn't spend more than a quid for a pint... and was cheaper than 75p in most the places we went... the vodka was even cheaper!

DONT - get in a cab on your own

My mate told me this story of how he did, and it took him way out of town, and tried to drop him off at this whore house west of the city.

needelss to say he refused, and the cabbie left him in the middle of no-where, having taken his money up front

thats a good point actually we were told this before we went. if you get a good hostel in the centre of town then everywhere decent is walking distance anyway. its not a big place

Never, ever buy a stripper a drink. She'll order a short and 'energy drink' which will cost about £30.

Head to the Lucerna Club for indie-type music, fit students and top-end bands (I fluked a visit to a De La Soul gig there for a fiver).

Make sure you take a daytime wander to the castle and cathedral district - it's gorgeous.

Don't drink in the 'English Pub' in the market square - why drink Carling for £3 a pint when you can drink Pilsner for £70p elsewhere.

It's a great city. Enjoy.

I was reading something the other day & it said Prague taxi drivers used to use some for of electro-shock device in the seats to make you pay exhorbitant fares, not sure how true that is!

DO - definitely sort out a travel pass for the time you are there, you can get these from a kiosk as you come out of arrivals in the airport. Then get the bus/underground into the city centre. They usually give tourists exact details of which number bus & tram line to get on and stop to get off at! Most helpful indeed.

Also, check out the part of town called Anděl City, this is where we stayed when we went & it's really starting to come alive after being redeveloped. We had a lovely 3 course (plus wine/beers/coffee) Italian meal in this part of town for 4 people for £18 (this is the sort of meal you would pay £150+ in London).

Oh, and re: the cab thing whilst monumentally wasted and off my nut on certain things, I wandered in completely the wrong direction out of a, er, 'gentlemen's establishment' for about 20 minutes, got utterly lost and hopped in a cab. The guy deciphered what the hell I was on about, took me straight to the hostel and didn't overcharge me one bit. So they're not all bad....

Ditto. Went to a number of nightclubs - there's a very cheesy one by the weir near Charles Bridge - caught cabs back to our hostel in the park overlooking the city (a bargain at £2 a night... not luxurious, but it had a bed and I was a student, so no complaints from me!) and never had a problem.

DO check out the local birds. They are almost all stunners!

DO drink local beer. It's cheaper and better than any imported stuff.

DO take local transport. The trams are cool, the tubes are quick & clean.

And finally, in the unlikely event you're feeling cultured, DO go to Dvorak's house, which is very cool.

:)

Check out Zizkov TV Tower, great views of the city, including views of Sparta and Slavia Pragues grounds, and has strange black babies crawling up the side of it!.

Make sure you jump on a tram aswell, a great way to see the city.

Beer of choice has to be Staropramen, Pilsner Urquell or Budvar, all around 75p a pint.

cheers for the tips guys. apparently there are some clubs that let u in for free then charge s**t loads to get out or u recieve a swift pasting from the meat heads on the door! anyone know if theres any truth in this? i heard it on the grape vine (dooby dooby)

Had this in Magaluf many years back. No idea if it goes on it Prague.

Find out what "the clock" actually means, its awesome!!

Dont get a taxi, no point, trams and metro so frequent and cheap as chips, like 12p.

Dont stay in bed all day!!

Try our some Chech pubs, for the food and DRINK!!

Go overboard with meals, so cheap, first meal I went for with my girlfriend, we had:

A total of 3 startes to share
2 Good size main courses
2 deserts
drinks consisting or 2/3 pints of larger and around 8 shots of spirits

Total : roughly £17

Take a five minute trip out of the town for dinner, food is BETTER and considerably CHEAPER!!

Take a tour, great value, and you will find out a lot of interesting stuff!!

I am disappointed no one has used the pun 'Czech it out' in this thread.

It couldn't be more obvious.

All i remember is a big sign saying no guns at most clubs, so dont take your guns, also Sex Park is a wonderful place like inshops with whores

Loved Prague, its a nice city, and has really dirty clubs you wouldnt take the missus to. Unless she worked there.

Find a decent strip club, the one we found was a tenner to get in and all canned lager was free all night (well up to about 7 cans).
The one we went to just made money from the dances, and I have to say the girls were amazing, if some were a little too drugged up!

Dont spend too much time drinking in the old square. Its was fiver a pint there, as opposed to about 60 pence at our hotel
