Roots Hall - a money pit ??

Rayleigh boy

Director⭐
I see our beloved Chairman has referred to the unique and atmospheric traditional football ground that is Roots Hall as a money pit.

I would like to point out that Martins wretched Fossets Farm dream is the actual monster money pit - costing zillions. Zillions that our Bentley riding bouffant boy does not seem to have.

A million quid on Roots Hall could turn it into a really special football venue - we don't need additional capacity.

We could exist in a pimped up Root Hall - loads of lovely onions on lovely burgers and bars full of real ales and even some cockles and mussels with our old school charm and excellent parking and public transport.

The biggest liability we have is not RH - it is the chairman.

If we could get rid of him before he gets his hands on next years season ticket money and advertising and sponsorship renewals we have a chance.

RH is not fit for purpose. It is past it's best. We need a modern stadium with year round revenue. RH cannot provide that

Roothall isnt a money pit .mORE LIKE A FLEE PIT ..Old and past its prime .Rember the little ditty London bridge is falling down .Well now its roothall is falling down .

If you don’t pay to upkeep something properly, then it can be no surprise that major and expensive issues arise down the line and they have.

If Roots Hall was looked after properly, it could have easily been our home for a number more years.

However, due to neglect it is now not fit for purpose. We have no choice but to move.

I hate it when a post makes me agree with RM... so I hate this post.

Roots Hall is a money bit. Starved of investment and maintenance or not. The structure will always mean high maintenance cost, high safety certificate and insurance feed and limited sources of non'match day income streams.

Its not the multi-use stadium that we are looking at moving into which would allow more use on non-match days.

Roots Hall (as a stadium) is used at most 30 times a year for 4 hours a day. That's a building that's used on only 8% of the year.

I have 2 brick outbuildings on my property that I would say have not been maintained since they first built in the 40s / 50s. Almost same build as Roots Hall (brick, wood and asbestos for the roof) Do I spend money improving them so they can continue to be used for 20/25 times a year. Or do I save that money, with a view to demolishing them and building a new home office garden room which becomes multi use and can be used on a more regular basis.

The term throwing good money after bad springs to mind when you think of Roots Hall. Planning permission submitted for a new stadium but lets spend a small fortune improving / maintaining the current stadium.

This has been done a number of times.

For a stadium, Roots Hall without significant development offers little extra revenue streams and is not cost effective re maintenance costs.

However, to let the stadium get to the state it is in now for 'customers' is disgraceful. Also I think it's fair to say that very little effort has been applied to maximise any possible revenue stream at Roots Hall for 20 odd years.

For any football club to survive in the modern world of football it needs revenue streams. Roots Hall has none and there is no real way of adding any

The new stadium will have plenty. A 7 day a week bar, various sizeconference rooms to hold things like seminars, concerts, xmas parties etc etc

All modern stadiums have these revenue streams as it's the only way to survive

Football clubs have to be businesses now

He is quite right of course, and no matter what people say about the decline he's allowed it to get into, he didn't make the East Stand out of a wood structure or the roofs of the West and North Stands out of asbestos. They were some of the biggest obstacles to overcome in it being even considered as a contender for a longer stay as our home.

Had a couple of gentlemen behind me yesterday one of whom was saying the West Stand roof has been condemned. I haven't heard that as such but I know it's a huge issue and it wouldn't surprise me if we did have to close the West Stand permanently before the planned move.

Roots Hall has bars and function rooms, though. I remember going to functions in the Shrimers Bar in the day. He's just given up on the place, and because it's taken so long, the ground is finished.

Back in the day football wasn't business, it was social. Roots Hall is a social club, not a business, no real way to generate money.
A 1000 seat function room can host a concert, xmas parties etc etc that can generate the money needed to support the club
