Southend United fanzine History

Shrimperlero was Argie Pete's fanzine. Was great fun, I used to enjoy that one.

WTSSG was where I cut my teeth in the fanzine world, many a memory of faxing my musings to Tony the Builder back in the mid-90s as a 15-year-old

The Roar was fading out by the time I was a regular at games, but I managed to get hold of a bound copy of all the issues on ebay a few years later and it was a cracker.

As someone who has been editing a fanzine for coming up to 20 years, the dedication it must have taken Steve to put an issue of TLG out for every game was phenomenal, very sad to hear of his passing yesterday. Always had a kind word for AAS and was a subscriber.

People have predicted for decades that print would die, but our sales are stronger than ever (thanks to everyone who bought one on Saturday). Like the persistence of vinyl records, people appreciate a slice of creativity in time. If I pick up an old copy of RHR or WTSSG, I'm instantly taken back to whatever that month was in the 1990s, drawn into the tribulations of Whelan or Alvin etc and you feel like you are back there, something that can't really be replicated online.

I seem to remember Wivs saying he had found a stack of Roars when clearing out a few months back. I'll ask him if he still has them.

Tony Hall (Builder who never finished FA) is a friend of mine who moved out to France 20 odd years ago with hid family.

If his fanzine had been about today the snow flakes like Chris Powell's Mate would be crying in their Ribena flasks given some of the content.

Great days with him and he brought many people together with some brilliant away days across the country.

On here as @Berrichonne shrimper I believe

Use to always get "what's the story Southend glory" many moons ago.

Yes, this was a semi controversial rag, with stories of persons at away days, back in the day, and older persons calling it "glorifying things that should not be".

Yes, if that fanzine was still about now, you would have had all sorts of persons having melt downs and hissy fits, and running as fast as they could to their keyboards.

Always wondered what happened to Tony.

Back in the mid 90's i used to stand at the back of the EAST Stand Blues, not with them, but just to one side of that bunch,
were some of them known as the CS Crew, not sure.

Two guys who did one of the fanzines called Ian & Derek used to sit next to me in the South Upper. To my utter chagrin I've no idea what it was called! 😕

I remember heading into the main entrance on the way to the South Lower the cry of "What's The Story, Southend Glory...only 50p!". My brother did a few away trips on Builder's Bus back in the day.

Wasn’t that Shrimp Season? Degsy used to be the editor. I have all of the fanzines in my garage apart from a couple of WTSSG which I couldn’t get my hands on.

Yes, remember Impending disaster. Seem to remember one coming out regarding our supposed move to Basildon…

Not a Fanzine but used to enjoy the 'Blues News' available to collect at Roots Hall.

@BigCol and @Jai and anyone else...My dad wrote (drew, photocopied, Selotaped....) Shrimperelo. Dad passed a few years ago. I only have one edition of the fanzine. A David Crown retrospective.

If you guys have any copies or know anyone that does I would love to speak to them.

Bit of a long shot I know but....

Cheers
Rich
I'll have a look Rich, I may have some somewhere but I don't want to promise anything.

Sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I never met him but the zine was a delight, quirky as hell!
