SUFC_History Youtube Channel

Hi all,

Alongside our Twitter feed, @SUFC_History now has its own Youtube Channel. We are busily converting VHS tapes and intend to post both highlights and full matches and we have started with a blinder, our 4-1 win in the first game at the New Den against Millwall in 1993.

You can watch this here...

Please subscribe to our channel to be informed when we upload more...this morning we have uploaded the highlights of the 3-2 win at Swansea in 2003 when we scored after having 3 players sent off.

Dave and Peter.

What a team that was, great spirit. Was at that Millwall game and remember it well. Such optimism at the start of that season (93/94). If only Fry hadn’t ****ed off and Gary Poole hadn’t missed that pen against West Brom...ah who knows. Other games that stick in my head were the 6-1 against Oxford (Mooney hat trick, 4-0 HT), 4-3 against Derby with king Ricky’s handstand celebration and the 3-1 against Brum for obvious reasons.

Great game to watch this one, although you wouldn't think so watching the first 20 minutes. I liked Barry Fry's half time interview. Derek Payne and Jason Lee probably had their best ever game for Southend. Watching that, you can't believe Jason Lee would only score 3 goals for Southend. He ended up being one of those strikers that missed chance after chance. But somehow, we managed to get £200,000 for him from Notts Forest the next season. Despite all that lovely hair, he went completely bald about 15 years later. He ended up playing for about 20 clubs. Barry Fry bought Tommy Mooney for £100,000, and after 14 games, loaned then sold him to Watford for £95,000. I always thought that Andy Ansah was so under rated. The guy just never stopped running with or without the ball. He also had pace and could score goals. I think Andy came back after ending his playing career, to do some sort of media work for Southend for a while, but now has no ties to the club, other than still being a supporter, as he can still be seen at games in the East Stand.

Well thank you @SUFC_History for posting this up, what a great first post. Just spent an enjoyable hour and a half re watching that game.

What a superb away day that was and to be a Southend supporter, to go to the New Den for their first ever League game there, and thrash them 1-4.

What a fantastic attacking team we had back then, Paul Sansome, Ricky Otto, Andy Ansah, Derek Payne, Jason Lee, Tommy Mooney, Andy Edwards, Andy Sussex, Grahame Bessington, Adam Locke, Brett Angell, and finally and not forgetting Chrisy Powell.

Looking forward to the next game now. :Thumbs up:

Ansah was definitely underrated in my opinion too. In the Derby game I referenced above, which I think was the last home game, I remember him and Otto tearing them a new one like it was yesterday but they often did that. That team looked like scoring every time they went forward at times. So much attacking talent.

Thanks for your support. We intend to post everything we have, both the good and the bad, it may just take us a while to get around to it. You’ve obviously seen the mountain of VHS tapes we have, and that picture was only half of them!!
Appreciate your support ??

Andy Ansah and Ricky Otto please sign them up ! Derek Payne played well as well,
goes to show the benefit of two big units up front , you have an out ball.

How positive were we, Andy Ansah never stops... getting a foot in all the time, something we are missing now, big time.

Billy Best is too long ago for us to have any video but I’m sure we’ll be covering all the others. In fact, our full game for this weekend has Roy McD playing. Thanks for your kind comments, glad you are enjoying the videos.
hoe do we pick this up on youtube ? just keep getting tv highlights or sheffield united thanks

Seeing the Millwall game of 1993/94 season, if Barry Fry didn’t bugger off to Birmingham, his managerial career would be different, he would be an premiership manager & doing well, like Harry Redknapp did.

Isaw the Southend v Millwall 3-3 draw today. Honest opinion from you fellow blues supporters .What was your opinion on the Southend manager at that time . I myself wouldnt have had him as manager off the Southend Transport team i played for in the Wednesday league back in the early 60s .

Just trying to think who the manager was, pretty sure Barry Fry had left by then, so Peter Taylor would have been manager for that game.
He done ok to be fair mid table in Div 1 the following season but then 'resigned'.
