Tips for Setting Up a New Shrimp Tank

Hey everyone,

I am setting up a new shrimp tank and could use some advice from experienced hobbyists. What are the essential steps I should follow to create a healthy environment for my shrimp. I am particularly interested in the following:

  1. Tank Size and Setup: What is the ideal size for a shrimp tank. Should I go for a specific type of substrate or decorations.
  2. Water Parameters: What parameters (pH, hardness, temperature) should I aim for. Any specific water treatments or conditioners you recommend.
  3. Filtration and Maintenance: What kind of filtration system works best for shrimp tanks. How often should I perform water changes.
  4. Tank Mates: Are there any compatible tank mates that would not harm the shrimp.
I also read this topic on this site [spam link removed] but I could not found anything helpful for me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best,
[Bolt]

This is going to sound completely at odds to any advice on websites!

I have a small 27l tank that my daughter used to keep dwarf shrimp and guppies in. She got bored of it so the guppies went but we couldn't catch all the shrimp, so I kept the tank as a 'nursery' for plants from my big tank. I do minimal maintenance on the tank - just top the water up every few weeks. I top up about 0.5l of tap water at a time!

There is an internal filter running, I clean that every 6 months or so. Heater in the tank keeps it at around 23 degrees.

As mentioned the tank is planted with live plants - so light is on around 6 hours a day.

I feed them a tiny amount of flake food every few days - but there is also plenty of algae in the tank.

I've surprised myself that the shrimp are still alive!

When starting a new tank though make sure you cycle the tank to get the water suitable. Don't use live fish to do that! Plenty websites should advise how to do it. And you'll want some chemicals to get rid of the chlorine in the water.

Hope that helps. Good luck

NB when my daughter was looking after the tank with the mini guppies in it was maintained better - for the health of the fish. Weekly 10% water changes, with new water treated with chemicals. Daily feeding etc
