Under-18s win again

Southend United's Under-18 team this morning completed their pre-season campaign with a 3-1 victory over Barking Abbey's Centre For Football Excellence, the opposition's team made up of players who receive UEFA-Licensed coaching and have shared a partnership with Waltham Forest F.C.

Richard Priest put Southend ahead on 7 minutes, and added a second five minutes from the end of the second of three half-hour periods to make it 2-1, with the visitors having scored with a low finish on the quarter-hour mark.

Jamie Forshaw, who has in the past been involved with Scotland's Under-16 international set-up, hit the outside of a post and was particularly unlucky with two further efforts, but Tashan Abeyinka made sure of the result with a drilled goal five minutes from the end.

Blues gave a trial to Slovenian youth international Dejan Krljanovic of CM Celje in the Slovenian First Division, amongst others.

A full report has been sent to the the official website and Shrimpers Trust site, and will appear there over the course of the weekend.

Ricky Duncan's men travel to Luton Town next Saturday in the first Youth Alliance fixture, and entertain Brighton & Hove Albion at Boots & Laces on September 1st in their first home game, for anyone unfortunate enough to miss out on the ballot for the trip to the Withdean Stadium that day.

Will be interested to see how they do this coming season. Rhys Henry, Forshaw, Priest, Lokando, Davis Abbey and Jonny Herd. Look out for them this year. This is by far the best youth set up we've had. Ever. Forget Tom McDonald, David McSweeney and Danny Kerrigan. These guys could come into the team in 2 years time, and, if they keep on improving the way they are at the moment, really make a name for themselves at the club.
