Echo News 'We have irons in the fire' - Blues boss Maher on the search for signings

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher admits the Shrimpers ‘have irons in the fire’ ahead of Saturday's trip to Dagenham & Redbridge.

Blues have held transfer talks with experienced Colchester United forward Tom Hopper and are also believed to be keen on at least two other targets.

But, despite not wanting to confirm the identity of the players, Maher confirmed that the club were in talks with potential new signing

“We’re certainly trying and we’ve got irons in the fire,” said the Blues boss.

“We’ve got a number of targets we’re looking at and we’d look to do some business if we can.”

Maher remains unsure if signings will be completed in time to feature this weekend but is remaining level headed following Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Barnet at Roots Hall.

“Of course it was disappointing and we want to be doing better but it’s two defeats in 10 games if you look at it,” said Maher.

“It’s our job to have that kind perspective on stuff and look forward to Saturday.

“We want to be better in the league, of course we do, but the club is still building and we want to be strategic and consistent in what we do.

“We’ve got to make sure we keep on trying to do the right things but it doesn’t always work out the way you would like.”

The Shrimpers head into this weekend’s clash sitting 14th in the standings, two places and one point higher than Daggers.

The hosts will head into the game having appointed Lewis Young as manager last month.

And Maher is intrigued to see how much difference that will make to Dagenham’s approach.

“They’ve had a new manager going in, who was Strevs’ (Ben Strevens) assistant, so I’m sure there will be a lot of consistency with what Strevs did too.

“I’m sure the new manager will have his own ideas so we’ll look at what he’s done in terms of changes.

“A lot of the players are still the same so we expect a lot of similarities to what we’ve faced before but as always our main focus will be on what we do and making sure we do things right.

“We always take a large following there and I’m sure it will be a good atmosphere too.”

Who ever they are, they will spend the first 3 games on the bench to build up minutes and spend 70 minutes each game taking notes and learning Maher ball 😂

Said exactly same to my mate.

Maher kills the excitement of most new signings by leaving them on the bench. Long for the days when new signings meant an exciting immediate debut rather than drip fed into the side over a month.

Always says there not ready, but he should know best, that it didn’t take Freddy Eastwood long (hat-trick on debut) if he signs anyone tomorrow throw them straight in for Saturday.
Freddy is coming back????
