Think one year, 1974?, we won two consecutive games on Good Friday and the Saturday 5-0 and 5-1 or the other way around. Think both results came out of the blue as we were struggling at the wrong end of the table at the time.

Yep, that was mine too. It was 1973. Guthrie and Best filled their boots. Luverly jubberly.

I was just 16, and my brother took me to both those games, but he also (I hesitate to admit it) took me to see West Ham v Southampton (Moore v Channon) on the Saturday morning which finished 4-3 to the Spammers. So 18 goals in three matches, hard to forget.

The one that I can remember was 2005, ****ing all over Rochdale on Good Friday with a 3-0 win, followed by a comfortable 2-0 away at Cambridge win on the Monday. I remember being so impressed that I told my mate I'd be disappointed not to do the league/LDV double.

Of course typical Southend we under performed, lost the LDV and threw away automatic promotion! Having said that without the wobble we wouldn't have had the joy in Cardiff. Second only to last seasons Wembley drama for me :Worthy:.

Remember that one, it was April Fools Day, and we kicked off at 7.45 pm. Wigan were in the promotion hunt, and as you say, we were fighting relegation.
At half time there was no way I could see us salvaging anything from the game, but the rest is history!. Think they had the ex Liverpool defender Alan Kennedy playing for them that night.
If i'd left at half time, and after the game asked anyone the final score, and they said we'd won 3-2, i'd have thought it was a late April Fool's wind up!.
All 5 goals were scored in the North Bank end, and Wigan had about 50 fans in attendance.

Yes - Kennedy was playing. I remember the last few minutes and Wigan desperately trying to get back in it. Every hoofed clearance into the stands felt fantastic!

1973, Chesterfield & Port Vale, or vice versa!. Cant remember. Sure we were 5-0 up on the Saturday as well, before conceding a late goal.
Back then most teams played 3 times over the 4 day Easter period. No one used to moan about fatigue etc!.

This was the one I was going to say, despite being away with my parents for easter , being 14, It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread

I will always remember that game , my wifes little yorkshire terrier had been run over and killed and all that I could think of that night while watching the game was little Poppy .

Remember that night well. Great times. We did the usual West Bank change ends at half time and were level with the winning strike. Flew into the net!

... and good use of the hoof, too. Often referred to as the doff, from us West Bank regulars at that time.

LOL. I've just looked "The doff" up in the Urban Dictionary!:blush:

If you went in one of the Leigh Comm cars you would know what happend at the station after the game .

Thats the sad thing...i dont remember much!!!
if im correct,im sure i am...going by car,a few leigh comm cars..either the car i was in or i think the car in front, getting stopped by the police...because of a "bottle"!!
Then going to Brighton station, waiting for Southend fans to turn up..none did...a few Chelsea???fans did, think they wanted to "support" us..getting into the Southstand....thats it...how i went home...dont remember.
I think i know what you mean at Hove station..
Not sure...but by Hove station..steps going down.and a pub underneath?? a confusing day!!

1988 was a good one. We beat Wigan 3-2 on Good Friday at the Hall in the old Division 3 after being 2-0 down. I remember Martin Ling scoring a lovely left-footed volley to equalise and then a late David Crown thunderbolt to win the game. We then went to Aldershot on the Easter Monday and Crowny scrambled a very late winner from a corner melee. We looked like we were going down until this weekend but won five of our last seven games to stay up including a 4-0 win v Blackpool on the last day of the season. The Echo dubbed it 'The Great Escape.'

Oh yes, this conjures up some memories. Was at all 3 games you mention and what results in each, especially v Wigan with, as you say, a cracker from DC! Was stood in the West in line with him as he hit it and the roof of the West Bank almost came off. Result aside, Aldershot on Monday was memorable for a different reason...transport! I drove to the game with a brother and a good friend in a Citreon 'classic' DS like this (same colour as well):

We were a few hundred yards from the ground and the car conked out (quite normal). So we pushed it around the corner in to a side road and ran to the game. Terrible view from the side of the pitch but just about saw the last minute winner. Great. Got back to the car but after about an hour it was still refusing to start. As we tried in desperation to get the thing going a car full of Aldershot lads kept driving around and around eyeing us up trying to decide if we were SUFC and it was worth starting something:smile:. How to get home? We spotted a house opposite with a Johova Witness poster in the front window and thought they'd let us use their phone (no mobiles then!). They did and I rang, and for an exorbitant fee, joined the AA. AA guy tried to get it started for about two hours. No joy. So he towed us to a nearby Citreon garage and (remember this was a Bk Hol Monday) we had to leave it outside with the keys hidden in the exhaust. Train home with a bag full of tools and bit and pieces from the boot, got back at midnight. Rang the Citreon garage the following day and the owner agreed to buy the car for about £50 so his trainee mechanics had something to play with.

So EVERY away game you go to has the potential to throw up the unexpected with events on and off pitch that live in the memory for ever! And the big moral of the story...avoid French cars like the plague:thumbdown:
