At the train station before
6.30am, trying to fathom out why I'm awake and going all the way to Yeovil.
After watching a 4-0 drubbing with Jenkins sent off, seeing HOW to take a
penalty, by the end of the day I had to wonder if the players had had the same
thoughts as I had when they'd woken up that morning....
Not that the day hadn't had
any other surprises in store, not least the 1.5-4 mile walk (depending on who
you talk to) to Yeovil town centre, after hearing that the first taxi would be
at least an hour. Great. So in the great company of other ShrimperZoner’s Vange
Shrimper and Spaceman Spiff, we finally set down at the town's JD Wetherspoons
and had a bite to eat; knowing that at least we'll be watching a team led by
(for the first league game since his return) David Webb display some passion on
the pitch.
Shame it didn't work out that
way really. Lee Elam scored his sides first around the 32nd minute after a
pretty even start to the game. This only proved to be the beginning of the end
however, as Darren Way and Lee Johnson continued to put the home side out of
reach in a devastating end to the first half. By half time all you could hear
were cries for the return of Kevin Maher. Jay Smith incredibly deputised in his
absence, and proved merely to wilt under the new responsibility. We can but hope
that he eventually regains the form that we saw from him last season; I'm
beginning to lose the faith on that one though. Why can't we have a captain that
rises to the occasion and leads by example? Is that really too much to ask?
At least in the second half
we only had to see Johnson complete his brace with a well taken penalty (at
least the travelling Shrimpers get to see one this season). Some how the away
side only started to show that they could defend once Neil Jenkins had helped
reduce his side to 10 men. Apparently, his sending off was for 'foul and abusive
language'. The ref' should have heard what was being said in the away end.
By this time the support
began to dwindle, with even a few scuffles breaking out amongst the away support
- it's a shame that the team hadn't shown as much passion. Not that this proved
anything other than to delight the home support. By the end of the game, the
songs and singing from the terraces had been replaced with occasional shouts by
individuals, so much so that before the final whistle you could watch out for
the next person to shout something.
4-0 did flatter the home side
though, it has to be said. They deserved to win, no question, but a four goal
deficit really was a little harsh. It's still bewildering me quite how that
score line represents what seemed a fairly even game of football. We have after
all played a lot worse this season, and this was our first real thumping. Ron
Martin really must be wondering how the side is going to get out of this mess.
Whilst sacking Wiggers seemed to be the right thing, what is going on now? Are
there other factors in play that we're failing to see?
The Yeovil faithful must've
seen the writing on the wall with the return of David Webb. How wrong the were!
How they must have been relieved to be witness to a shambolic Southend. Was this
really a team managed by their former saviour? Could this really be a team under
the same influence that began their rise into the football league? Can Southend
really survive?
It's just a good thing that
our next game will not be showed on TV. It really would be daunting to go into a
game that will be shown over the world after we've seen our side embarrassed by
the Glovers. Imagine a televised game in a cup against non-league opposition
after a thumping, the chance for INTERNATIONAL humiliation. Oh dear.
There, I did it. I reported
on a 4-0 drubbing with out f**king swearing. Oh Sh*t. Argh! Did it again...
