THE PRE-SEASON CAMPAIGN
Summer 2004

SATURDAY 17 JULY 2004

East Thurrock United 0 Southend United 7
A comprehensive victory for the Shrimpers in their first outing of the summer; it's only East Thurrock but, who knows? Far too many past summers have been spent watching the Shrimpers puff and pant against lesser opposition in pre-season games. Southend United 2 Canvey Island 1
Another victory over the Marsh Rats and another 21-man scuffle between the two near-neighbours. The gargoyles from the Rock took the lead through goal machine Lee Boylan but skipper Kevin Maher and Wayne "Striking Sensation" Gray were on hand to put those Conference boys back in their place ...

Billericay Town 1 Southend United 1
A second successive draw against non-league opposition shouldn't really be cause to ring the alarm bells; this is pre-season after all. Broughton scored the opener after just four minutes before former Shrimper David McSweeney equalised with twenty minutes remaining in an entertaining encounter at New Lodge ...

WEDNESDAY 28 JULY 2004

Southend United 0 Brighton & Hove Albion 0
A third successive draw for the Shrimpers but this time they really worked for it against an extremely physical side from the South Coast. Southend played some wonderful stuff at times and were lucky not to have come away with a victory after both Lewis Hunt and Tes Bramble went close ...
