Another defeat but plenty of positives to take from it.

For the first time I can remember we've matched a team in the second half. Our performance improved as th ematch went on, this could be attributed to the fact we had 8 subs to their 1 but noneytheless it's the first time we've managed to look more solid at the end than at the end. For anyone not there we lost 5-1 but were 4-1 down after about 30 minutes.

Well played Toddy, recovered from an early clanger to look very solid in his box, 3 times their players got through and he actually charged out and blocked their efforts rather than waiting for the shot. Looking much better, though still need to sort out that kicking. Also thought Mark and Steve looked a very good CM partnership. Finally a mention to Napster who looked totally lost in central midfield at the start but once he moved back to central defence was totally comfortable and made some excellent interceptions.

Let's take this onto next week. If we apply ourselves there's no reason we can't get something out of the game.

Well done lads for turning it around, a bit more self belief and we could turn a corner. A special mention to MrB for taking on the Captain's armband and playing like a captain. You show that no matter where you play you will always give your best. And yet again you have proved that. Toddy, you came back to how you were playing a few matches ago. You need to own your box, your the boss in there, show me next week that this was not a one off. Well done Naps and Chadded for taking on unfamilar roles, both of you played well at centre back alongside MrB.

One final mention to Shagster for taking on the role of ref at half time. Cheers fella I owe you one. http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Usual Suspect to you. Joined the team back in July, and played in the 5-a-side over Benfleet. He had day off from his current team, so Shags asked if it was ok for him to come over which I said yes and stated he would only get a half. However due to the fact Durera woke up late (this clock thing had to get someone, shame he had all the balls) and you were not there I decided he should start.

Well done all, esp. Mr B. Andee and I both agreed to give you the armband after Snowy's fit of pique, and you certainly rose to the challenge.

Naps certainly was more comfortable at CB than CM, so thats good news for when Uncle, Snowy and ORM hang up their boots.

Well done Adam, I think you and I played quite well together when you came on.

I think we all surprised ourselves in the 2nd half, we were under quite a bit of pressure but managed to only concede one when usually we just stop and watch the other side bang in 4 or 5.
I honestly think this is because the defence were telling the midfield where to go, what to do and who to mark - we all seemed to be a bit more switched on and aware.
Their number 7 ( the guy with the Alice band ) was getting seriously wound up and starting arguments with his own players - this has to be a good sign that we were doing something right.

And I know I surprised myself by managing to get forward AND track back right until the end ( Kev take note! )

One thing we need to do more of is talking. Too many times in the first half all i could hear was my own voice and B's. This seemed to improve in the 2nd half - which coincided with our improved performance. It's not even just a case of calling for the ball or telling people they've got time. it's also a case of encouraging people when they've cocked up, telling people where to go. Together we can go forward as a team!

<span style='font-family:comic sans ms'>Sorry about the punctuality - what a (insert swearword/s here) tw*t. http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

We showed a lot of promise in the second half - some of the errors in the first half will be overcome if we finally get the week day training started. I appreciate that not everyones going to be able to be there week in, week out for the full time (me included), but we need to sort it, at the moment its too much of a double edged sword - we need the games too.

I&#39;ve played on the side of midfield every game before, and always spent more time covering for defence. The defence didn&#39;t need that yesterday and was extremely solid in the second half. I&#39;ve never played RB before, and enjoyed it - Lee and I, I felt, worked well together again. Steve and Mark worked well together in particular, but I think everyone can hold their head up high despite the score line.

Next week. Hopefully. Finally&#33;

ps. Don&#39;t forget I&#39;ll be there about 9.3,0 Todd, so you can kick balls at me to see if we can clear that half way line&#33;

I watched the whole of the first half from my vantage position as lino away from everybody else on the other side of the pitch and again for half of the second half. I&#39;m glad I only played 20 mins or so and I think it was a bit harsh to take Dan off who was having a great second half.

I honestly believe we&#39;ve turned a corner. Forget the result and look at the positives from yesterday.

1) After 25 minutes of the first half and for the entire second half we more than competed. For the first time since the club formed we&#39;ve played in a match with shape and formation. (OK it took us 25 minutes to get there but we did it).

2) Some of the battling in the second half when we didn&#39;t have the ball was fantastic.

3) We finished strongest and dominated the last 15 minutes.

4) You&#39;ve proved to yourselves that there are no superstars needed in the team. As long as you have eleven functioning as a unit it doesn&#39;t matter who plays. Some would argue that Kev, Unc and Snowy are automatic choices. There is no such thing as an automatic choice.

5) For the first time I&#39;ve started to get a feel for a starting line up for next season, and the best thing is that there are at least two options in most positions.

6) I hate singling out individuals because others may feel they&#39;ve been harshly treated but I&#39;m going to give a special mention to Mr B and Napster who were both handed a massive responsibility after 20 minutes or so. Beaten a couple of times with balls over the top but other than that rock solid.

We CAN build and learn lessons from this. We virtually have the fitness side licked (though this is continuous battle). If we can settle down from kick off we can compete with anybody that we&#39;ll face in the league next year. To achieve this places a big focus on the midfield for 15-20 minutes while we assess the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition.

We&#39;re getting there.

Thought the team played well after a very shaky start, a couple of goals from balls that were simply flicked over the top and put away. Another one that was from about 25 yards that found its way under Todd and we found ourselves three down in no time at all.

Snowy had a &quot;moment&quot; that led to a re-shape at the back with Napster dropping back. If Snowy going off did one thing for the team it got a few of us riled and the tackles finally started to go in and had abit of passion and a point to prove that we weren’t gong to be rolled over.

The final 15 mins of the first half we really started to settle and closed them down with lots of hard work and chasing. I think our goal came from us hassling at the edge of our box and forcing them back to their own half and conceding a throw in to which Dave launched in for Dan to finish off.

The second half started with a few subs and our game carried on as we finished the first half, unfortunately we let a goal in (which I can&#39;t remember so can&#39;t comment on) but then we really started to get our game going.

Superb play at the back from Mr B and Napster and also Andy (who I think is Durea?) who was very strong at right back and left the queer No 7 with nothing to do but platt this flowing locks (note to him: if your going to have your name and number stitched on your boots at least learn how to put a cross in, its not fair on Todd having to keep fetching the ball when you spoon it out).

We had so much possession in the second half I&#39;m surprised we didn&#39;t score more, we hit the bar, Shrek had his chance at the end and we also had various counter attacks with three on threes that weren’t finished off. Something that I&#39;m sure can be practiced in training.

Sun Star Man: Mr B - Led by example when taking the armband (should he keep it http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif ) chucked himself into every tackle and never stopped talking and encouraging people. Along with Shags, Napster, Snowy, Tony, Uncle, BC, Carter (some lovely balls down the wing) and Andy I think there is the making of a VERY solid defence.

Moan of the Match: Killer grass burn on my arse and feeling like a ten year old with an extra large shirt.

Also a mention to Shrek who didn&#39;t turn up to be ref and did us a favour by doing it for the first half. Got alot of grief that wasn&#39;t due and people from both sides seemed to forget that he was doing us a favour and didn&#39;t have a whistle.

The goal.

A long throw on, great flick on, great headed finish. Other than Snowy&#39;s toe punt last year possibly the best SZFC goal so far.

Everything about Shagster is massive. His throw-in, his passion for SUFC and SZFC, his contribution on and off the field to the success of SZFC and, ahem, his continuing efforts to get there on the fitness front.

Until Shags is able to get 90 minutes in we need to make more use of his long throw ins. There is no point having the weapon unless we can use it to our advantage. Much more movement is required and a bit of thought. At least two players need to think about getting the flick on and at least two players need to think about what happens next.

One for Unc to try out on the training ground. A good exercise for defenders, midfielders and attackers.

It seems that there are two types of courses run by the Essex FA

WEEKEND COURSE
This has been designed for those who cannot attend a course over a period of time.
In this course you will only be taught the basics of refereeing compared to the two tier training course. You will not be able to gain the experience of refereeing a match as time does not allow.
However you do take the same written and oral referee examination.
Due to the intensity of this course we do recommend where possible candidates should attend one of the two tier type of course. The weekend course costs £65

TWO TIER COURSE
The course is split into two parts. The first four weeks give the candidate a general grounding on the laws of the game and conclude with an exam at the end. All those who pass this exam will be issued with a certificate and the opportunity to continue onto Part Two. Those who do not intend to Referee can stop the course.
The Second Part, which we hope you all continue with, looks at the laws in respect of how to administer them as a Referee. You will also get the chance to experience the role of an official with a minimum number of games to be completed by the end of the course. During some of these games you will be accompanied by an experienced official who will and guide you through those important first few games.
There will be regular feedback sessions during the course to help you. The course finishes with a written exam followed a week later by an oral examination and the results.
The Two Tier Course costs just £10.

Bob Cratchitt
29-03-2004, 04:26 PM
Maybe we should encourage the whole team to attend the first part of the two tier course. So at least we all know the rules, and will not try to stop a match again when you are not entitled to http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

ORM had bought a whistle after the last time we were without one. I believed it to be in the first aid kit bag which was delayed due to Durera. However it now appears to have gone missing.

In future I want who ever is going to be manager for the match to look after this bag and ensure the whistle is in it. I will be buying a new whistle. Also we need to make sure who ever refs hands the whistle back to the bag owner.

I dont actually mind being a referee on occasion but i&#39;d much rather be playing. And lets be honest, if i&#39;m fit (well you know what i mean) and im there, i&#39;m playing ... http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

To be honest, i haven&#39;t played in centre mid all season for Shoebury and have been out of the left/right wing or left/right back. Central midfielder is a mugs position as 75% of the time everyone think its your fault. Yesterday, i didnt think i played that well as a right back but because i made a few challenges, won all the headers and nearly scored, people thought i was superb. My distribution was cr*p yesterday, but as a defender it doesn&#39;t matter.

I dont mind being put out on the wing and being a lazy bitch&#33;&#33;

Just means you got a bit of competition, which can only be a good thing - you gotta prove to Colin/ORM that you are the better right back and Adam has to do the same.

And it&#39;s no different to Snowy, me, Unc, Kev, Naps, Mr B and Big Al who have all tried out centre half at some stage. Btw I am usually RB for Sutton, sometimes CB, so there is additional competition for RB as well.

But this competition goes for all positions we have. A lot can change between now and Aug/September when the league starts.

This should be an incentive for everybody.
