He's ex Southend aint he? Either way he was just presenting a cheque for 8 grand to SHSB's develoment appeal.

One of Southends finest midfielders went onto West Ham was equally a hero there...last I heard he was manager/coach a few seasons back with Halifax

He's more than simply "ex-Southend", chadded. He is one of the finest midfielders ever to have worn the blue of Southend United.

Ever since he left, we have been looking for "the next Peter Butler" - despite having had players of the calibre of Marsh, Whelan, Tinkler and others in midfield, none of them could match Peter Butler for industry, hard tackling, fire & grit.

He was an awesome player, Chadded - in my top 5 of favourite ever Blues players. Napster could probably say more on the subject - he sponsors Peter Butler's plaque in the SUSCT Wall of Fame.

Different Peter Butler- the ex-player is managing a side in Singapore.

The Peter Butler mentioned could be one of the club's largest shareholders though and a Trust member.

I remember he used to live in Eastwood, always walked his dogs on Green Lane. Great bloke, always happy to stop + chat.

Hopefully my Wall of Fame article on him will be up soon...there's a fantastic excerpt from an interview he did about his Southend days.

Thought I'd heard the name. This one works for the Essex sports trust or something like that.

I totally agree with you there MtS.

Remember when he had a really bad injury whilst with us (might have been knee ligaments?) - well, he was such a favourite of mine, I went up to Roker Park from Essex just to see his comeback game (oh and to watch us spank the Makems! - again!). I was still at school I think and it was one hell of a journey - 7/8 hours on the coach?

During the stop at the services we all played football in the car park and I scored a couple of goals and when I got back on the coach everyone cheered me! Now that WAS a great day :-)

I think Petterfer could have a touch of the Butlers about him if played in the middle?

Maybe... but is he hard enough? That's what made Butler so good - hard & aggressive, yet skilful and pivotal. Our answer to Roy Keane, if you like - a figure that every truly successful side needs.

Haven't seen Pettefer enough yet to know whether he could fulfil that role.

Indeed Butt's was a legend, he wore the Southend shirt with so much passion and pride. 110% week in week out and defo in our top midfielders of all time.
