View Full Version : Heading
As is becoming painstakingly obvious one of our biggest deficiencies is our ability to head. Be it flicking on Toddy's 'kicks', defending the opposing goal kicks or just generally winning headers and getting something behind them.
If Adam is going to get to the game early on Sunday to help Toddy with his kicks, I'd suggest it might be worth some of us joining them to try and work on defending them/flicking them on. If we can win more of these it will help us out no end.

Although I doubt I'll be able to get there early Sunday, I agree that this is something that needs to be worked on in training.
And, yes, I know I'm probably one of the worst culprits.

If Toddy is avalable through the week i could go down the park with him to practise hes kicking.
Also i could get down to next weeks game early but would need a lift!

Toddy can't kick it 10 yards ... which makes it impossible to head!!

lack of height also makes it hard to head the ball.
all he needs to learn is to get his foot under the ball

Keeping your eyes wide open and going for the ball often helps, rather than a vague stab piroutte with eyes shut which, quite frankly, looks incredibly embarassing.
If you get hurt heading a football then you've either gone in like a fairy, the ball is too soft/hard or Carter has connected with one from a distance of 5 yards or less.

Is that us or the ball? If it's the ball then it didn't seem to pose too many problems for the opposition!

Its not so much a lack of height as a lack of power and distance. Its hard to get a great deal of power in a flick-on as a lot of it is relying on the power already on the ball to keep it moving forward (I believe a physicist would call it momentum) the attackers find it easier as they are running in the direction they want to head it, therefore creating more power. Its also hard when the ball is dropping a couple of yards outside your own penalty box and your trying a flick-on in an area where there should be a greater emphasis on distance ie getting the fecking thing away from our goal.

Surely it's just easier to have a somebody at the back taking the goal kicks instead of 'keeper (at least until they improve).

Easiest way to get a bit of height is just to lean back when you kick it. Won't be a technically correct way to do it but at least you'll achieve the desired effect.

it often helps to keep your eyes open when heading the ball.don't be afraid of the ball, attack it like you would with the vigour of a 2 footed studs up tackle and you will have no probs heading the ball further than the keeper can kick by the sound of things.it also helps to give a jimmy conners type shout as you head the orb, this will also add great distance and scare some opponents sh*tless.

I'll have a go. I shouldn't have any problem getting it to the half way line at least. As long as someone pushes into the midfield to cover me while I do.

I dunno why this is an issue.
I came on for the last 20 minutes and took 3 kicks. It's not hard to connect with the ball and get 40/50 yards on it. I always focus 100% on it and imagine it is Leeboy. http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

No he said 'you're a big pr.....' ...sorry, you keep thinking he said kick.
It doesn't have to be me - I was just volunteering, if there's someone at the back that can take them then all well and good.

I feel it should be Toddy but hey what do I know, he just needs to learn how to kick it properly. I watched monkey tennis on Sunday after footie and even their keepers could kick the ball past the centre circle. So come on Toddy dont get beaten by a load of dykes.

Toddy can kick the ball more than 20yds and has proved this in training when I had him and Wayne working on this but in a game he tends to rush things and forgets what he needs to do to get the ball up the field, also we need to look at giving him an option of a short ball out to the fullbacks.
Bob Cratchitt
02-04-2004, 09:18 AM
Unc - we did suggest this at half time and also instead of punting it up the centre to knock it out to the wings. In fact vary the kicks so to keep the opposition on their toes. But during the match he kept reverting back to punting up the middle.

It was just turning into a bit of a slag-off and I didn't want Toddy to get down-hearted about it (cos, lets face it, the alternative is Leeboy which by all accounts is equivalent to putting my Gran in goal)
Its a lot to do with the feckin useless centre midfielders not being able to head the ball for toffee too.
