He was talking about his own personal achievements, since he couldn't have done any worse at Southend if he'd tried, rather than a better club, since you can't do any better than Southend if you tried...

I actually quite liked the look of Marney but in true "Newmanesque" fashion we played him out of position.
He always played better as a frontman and IIRC even came back with Brighton reserves and bagged a brace of goals!
The lad had potential and like other players such as D'sane we never gave him the chance!
