View Full Version : Waffle thread for this Sunday's Game

OK Gang you can use and abuse this thread for discussion about anything relating to Sunday's game.

Healthy and constructive debate would be appreciated as well as a bit of the usual humour along the way.

For example. What has been going wrong in the past ? *Are you played out of position ? Are the tactics wrong ? Do we make too many substitutions and disrupt the flow of the team ? Does Leeboy's bum look big in the shorts ?

OK I'll start.

It's about time Shrimperzone FC grew up.

Nope I'll start that again.

The time for Shrimperzone FC to grow up has long passed, we've missed the boat and we are now playing catch up. We are starting in the league in less than six months which doesn't seem a long time but it will fly by.

Running a successful club requires a heck of a lot of hard work off the field which the Committee and others have been and continue to do and we are financially secure, despite the fact that we still have no sponsor appointed.

Running a club on the field requires me to pick the right blend for starters and maybe not being around so much hasn't helped but Uncle, Andee and others have filled that void admirably.

Now is the time to stand up and be counted. The general stamina has improved no end but still needs work doing (no issues here). In patches we play some outstanding football but there are three things that I have identified that still need much improvement.

1) The most important part of your play isn't what you are doing when you have the ball, it's what you are doing when you don't have it. Giving away the ball is hardly a crime and the best people do it. Giving up recovering the ball is unforgiveable.

2) Composure - We're getting a lot better at this as a team but we still haven't learnt how to react when we concede a goal and are likely to let two or three go by in quick succession.

3) Finishing *- Our goalscoring record speaks for itself.

Sunday gives us the opportunity to give a good account of ourselves. Let's ****IN' DO IT.

Prehaps a change in formation, seeing as these are bottom of 5, I think we should pack 5 in the middle and try and get a few more goals from midfield and stop relying on dave and dan; Just a thought.

This is their record:
P W D L F A GD P
Urban Kings 16 3 1 12 24 56 -32 7

Even though they are bottom they haven't got the worst defensive record in the league (although an average of 3.5 per game), just apears that they can't score many goals.

not being out of order to either Dan or Dave, but maybe we should change the front 2 for a half, or maybe keep one but change their strike partner?

and no Mark, we haven't played them before

Shame I can't play really.

I think 90% of any team's evolution is the gelling of the players into a coherent whole. Teamspirit engenders teamspirit and performance is the epitome of a Mannschaftgeist, encouraged by the management, the committee, but most of all, by each other. It needs a Kierkegaardian leap of faith to clarify these promises into action, but like the first Holywood mogul who saw the potential of moving pictures, anything is possible and anything is achievable and nothing is pre-determined.

Having said all this, it predisposes me to elucidate further. No man is an island. But I digress slightly. What we need is committment bit on and off the field. We are building a club, not a team. The team will always come second to the club. One club to rule them all, if I may be Tolkien about it for a moment.

To win on Sunday requires dedication a la Roy Castle. I'm not for one minute endorsing playing the trumpet in smoky jazz cafes or tap dancing non stop for 24 hours, but merely espousing the virtues he clearly held dear. Dedication and a knowledge of movement, always movement. Follow the shadows and light- close the play down and let our defences be as impenetrable as a chaste maiden in the time of our King Henry the IV. Let our midfield snap at the heels of the oppositon like a small terrier, never knowingly defeated but always snapping away. Let our attack be fluid, creative and lucid.

Let us have the mindset of a great chess grandmaster who has been in retirement for 10 years, but comes back for one last time- one last throw of the dice, just to show these young upstarts (Nigel Short, do you hear me?) who's the boss. Who has the fire to quench the floods of Abraham? Who has the desire like U2? Who has the passion of Christ?

We can win and win well. We can play and play well. We can do all the above but it is togetherness I ask for. For in the end that is what augurs well for next season. That and scoring ten goals.

Or is that all b******s?

Urban Kings!!

We have not played them before. I am really happy that we are playing them, a mate from college plays for them and he does talk about how Kings will beat us if we played each other in a game, so me and Dan would like to have bragging rights until the league starts. His dad seems to be a snowy type of player, at the back and looks hard.

I think that they have beaten Rylands too.

Id like a few more through balls to try and run onto in this game.
When we first started i was gettin played a fair few and ok i didnt score, but i was havin the chances.
In recent games ive been recievin the ball mainly with my back to goal, and altho i have the speed to turn and beat a player, on a flat 30 yarder without turning, ill mince any defender for pace (unless theres some fast bugger like me in there defense).
Im not critisining anyone, mostly myself probably for not offereing those runs, but if we get a defense that like to push there offside trap up to the half way line, some balls in the space behind that would be greatly appreciated, and i know Snowy is particualry good at measuring these.
I think what im tryin to say is that im better running away from ppl, than i am running at them, if you's get me jist??

Seeing as this is a free-for-all post I'd like to shed an opinion (or two) http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I take it everyone will be getting a run-out this Sunday so at whatever point I am thrown into the thick of the action, I'm asking that I be given a free-role. I'm not trying to sound cheeky telling the gaffer(s) when and where to play me, but the Sunday before last I was played in a covery-winger postion and evidently was a liabillity to the team because of my attacking play. Colin pointed out several times that I wasn't getting back enough, but dee-fence really isn't my game and never has been.

Also with Dave being given perhaps a lone-striker role it will give the pair of us more space to use the ball and start scoring some goals because our current ratio speaks for itself.

Not knowing much about your team,do you have a couple of wingers who aren't afraid to run at defenders? If so make sure they hog the sidelines. When i played for Canvey rovers in the sceptre prem i used to use all the width of the pitch on the left wing, this would open up the centre of the field ,skin the defender and get in some good crosses. My point being ,apart from waffling, get someone with speed and skill out wide and you can terrorize and confuse any defence.

Do not underestimate any team you play against. This team maybe bottom of Div5, but they have been playing together for a season already and will know exactly what they need to do.............the question is will we???

I unfortunately have made the decision not to play again this season, in an attempt to finally resolve my injury problem. Sorry guys, More than anyone I still want to play football, and with my advancing years do not want to miss out on any games I could actually play in.

Good luck for the game Sunday, and remember give it your best, and show them exactly how we can play.

Although Kev was obviously mucking about with his team, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea for people to put up what they think the team should be, formation, strategy etc.

It goes without saying that the management pick the team, but maybe somebody might put a player in a position or suggest a formation that the management haven't thought of and that could be a benefit for the team.
