What a difference a week makes. Forget the 0-3 scoreline, all the goals were in the last 15 minutes (I think) and up to then the sides were very evenly matched. We were beaten by two very good goals and everyone can be happy with the contribution they made.

The big difference for me is that unlike last week, the defending was good in all areas of the pitch. The midfield worked tirelessly and I think the decision to dispense with wide midfielders paid dividends as we don't really have anyone who has the fitness and pace to get up and down the flanks all match. If we can play like we did in the first half for 90 minutes we'll be ok.

Well done guys.

Yep, very pleased with the efforts this week. Forget the 3-0 scoreline we were even for 75 minutes, their second goal was something special and the game was over by the time they got the third.

In the first half I thought we were the better team. I wouldn't say we dominated but we did have more possession and put a lot of thought into the game. We were always on the backfoot in the second half but we did have our moments.

The big difference this week was that we had some shape and organisation in the middle of the park. There is nothing wrong with playing two wide midfielders when you have two centre midfielders winning everything, but we've never been in that position. I think Steve, Mark and Simon worked fantastically well, particularly in the first half and gave our defence a well earned breather. All of them listened and tracked back which made a big difference.

Dave and Dan ran everywhere up front and a goal would have been a good reward but it wasn't to be. Perhaps if they'd gambled on the odd bouncing ball, especially form the long throw ins it may have been different, but that's life. Toddy pulled off one outstanding save in the second half when it was still 0-0.

All in all much, much better and we can at last hold our heads up a bit higher.

Lastly Carter I didn't get a proper chance to thank your old man for reffing. Please say thanks for me.

Well done all. We're trying to get a pitch for 9th May. This could well be our last match for a few months but I hope everyone will be at training every week. We worked hard last summer but had some laughs along the way. This summer we have a real target to aim for.

Well done everybody a great effort put in by all, sorry I had to go off( again) after 15 mins but my calf is not right and I will need some time to make sure it is heald properly.
I thought we played the better football in the first half and we were unlucky not to go in a goal up.
A bit of credit must go to Tony for looking at the midfileld and making some changes in the way we played and it worked much better this week.
We did fade a little bit towards the end but again we made eight changes during the game and was beaten by two quality goals.
Nobody had a bad game but if I had to pick a few players out for a mention Tony my MOTM worked hard to keep the team going and to keep the shape we had Dan and Dave who worked So hard up front for no reward.
Steve,Mark Simon who kept going right to the end and to all of the defenders we made so many changes at the back but everyone played with passion and pride.

Really really sorry to Shrek& Patsy who only got on for the last nine mins.

Lets take this forward and try to improve on what we are doing.

ORM I did thank Carters dad for reffing he was knackerd but I think he enjoyed.
See you all at training

Much, much better than the previous week. The midfield were superb, worked really hard and tracked back when needed ( which is always a boost http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )

I thought Dan had an excellent game, chased everything and won so many headers against bigger, taller guys than himself.Steve and Simon's vision in midfield was excellent as well, playing the ball intelligently.
It's also good to see that Shags' long throws are slowly paying off, with a bit more practice I don't think it will be long before we score from one.
Also well done to Toddy, looked a lot more confident this week, especially that great save, and well done to Colin, B and Andee for keeping the Judas quiet for 75 minutes.
Nice to see 'Rusty' Axe and Marathon Man back as well, looks like we'll have 'healthy' competition for places come the beginning of next season.

What a great game we had yesterday
We opperated as a unit, and kept our shape superbly.
That first half was the best football we have played. There were times when we had the ball and played it around a bit, which shows we are bonding better as a team
I reckon if the first half had been about 5 minutes longer i think we would have got the goal we deserved!
I think half time was a slight turning point, as it gave the opposition time to regroup, and they came out with more shape in the second half, but thats no discreidt to us.
We gave them one heck of a game, and every player at Shriperzone FC can hold there head high.
Carters dad was an excellent ref, he took no s**t and let the game flow, good call by whoever let him ref!

If anyone knows of a place where i can get free football boots id be very appreciative!!

Well done everyone, it was good to see everybody compete for the whole time. There was times when concentration did lapse but these were very far and few between especially compared to last week. So lets keep up the effort.

Sorry for the first goal. I should have stood my ground longer and not allowed him to get the cross into the box.

Not much to add now, but the gaffer did make an excellent decsion with regards to the midfield and the amount of headers he won there was superb. Nobody actually played bad this week and we can only go fowards.

I would try phoning him (Tony that is not the ref), or even better ask the ref if you can pass on his contact details to Tony. And then stand out the way, this will mean you will not get caned for a ref no-show! Simple really.

For what my opinion is worth, I thought that was the best team performance that I have seen from you guys. The only difference in the end was that we took advantage of the very chances we were presented - but on another day the result could quite easily have gone the other way. ignoring the bit of petulance at the end, I enjoyed yesterdays game very much, although I will be steering clear of overhead kicks until the ground has softened up a little!!!!!

Jack, can I make a suggestion? Why don't you send ORM and Bob Cratchitt a pm, giving them both the name and contact telephone number of your friend who reffed for us the other week. That way, if we do need a ref, then they can get in contact with him themselves, without having to go through you all the time (cutting out the middle man).

Thanks.

Hmmmm, I remember this incident and your "petulance" was no different to my "honesty". This was for the corner that wasn't and I believe it was Toddy's middle finger that got to the ball. That's the first time it's ever been used ! http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I think it was one of those games where the first goal would decide the winner. An even first half which we probably slightly edged and a fairly level start to the second half but you definitely dominated the last 30 minutes or so.

I really enjoyed that game and I'm pretty sure your guys did too. No gimmes and a victory your lot had to work bloody hard for.

Good game yesterday lads, especially as it was way too hot to play football, i was feeling a bit leggy after only about half hour as it was so hot!

Well done gaffer on the midfield decision, it payed off as the lads in the centre of the park won the ball back alot after we had given it away. We didnt have a real chance yesterday, which was frustrating, because i think if we had scored the first goal at the same sort of time as they did we would have gone on to win the game.

I have played in the same team as Toddy for 2 years now, and that one of the best saves i have ever seen him make, keep it up mate. *http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

hockleyshrimper
27-04-2004, 07:30 PM
Here's my 2 pence worth.

First half you had a lot more possesion than us and were marginally the better team. This was down to tactics. Firstly, a bad decision by myself for playing 4-5-1. judas didnt get a sniff when he was up front on his own and he had no help from the midfield (myself included), and secondly for the masterstroke from ORM who certainly did his homework in your midfield.

Personally, i feel we have 3 or 4 good headers of the ball, but your long throws caused us problems. Against a smaller team i can see you scoring a few goals this way. And also that big lump that comes off the bench (no, not Barry Harris, the other one) will be a menace in this tactic. However, for all your possesion you didnt have a lot of shots. You need to gamble more.

In the second half we reverted to our favoured 4-4-2 to help Judas out and our shape looked a lot better. The first goal was crucial. When the second 'lucky' goal went in i felt it was all over.

Since the first time we played you i thought the fitness from both teams was a lot better, well done lads.

Big thanks to the ref, sorry about all the moaning...again.

Keep it up lads.

Thanks for the kind words. I think both teams have come on leaps and bounds since the early days. Very impressed with your team's development, very composed on the ball and trying to play footie rather than kick and hope.

Although you outnumbered us numerically in midfield in the first half you were trying to pass the ball through us rather than over or around us and in those hard bouncy conditions you spent too much time getting the ball under control.

The pleasing thing for me was that although Benji saw a lot more of the ball in the second half we still kept his clear opportunities down to a bare minimum. We kept our shape and composure even when the first goal went in, usually our biggest weakness.

I found out today that Cupids has one pitch only (out the front) open the whole summer through and it can be booked. I think overplaying each other is not good but 1 game every 5-6 weeks might not be a bad idea.

Bob Cratchitt
27-04-2004, 08:45 PM

Don't know exactly. The normal ones are £60 so I'd guess £60-70. By comparison Eastwoodbury Lane (arguably not as good surfaces are £80 by virtue of the fact that it is Borough HQ). We can ask on Sunday (and make some bookings for as many summer games as we want if we feel the need)

Glad you managed to get it sorted Tony, i think you'll find the pitch will cost £50 per game

Like Andee said, you'll either need a healthy supply of balls or willing volunteers to retrieve said balls from the ditches. Maybe Hils could do it? http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
