For me, after football (and sex!) there is nowt better than live music. Lets have your top 5 live musical performances you've witnessed in person...

1) Faith No More, Brixton Academy (weeks before they split http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif )

2) Green Day, V98 (I think) - No better band for entertainment.

3) Stereophonics, Nottingham Ice Arena

4) Foo Fighters, Reading 2002 - rocking!

5) Bush, Nottingham Rock City - intense

Incredible band and even thinking about them split up now makes me feel gutted.

The way Mike Patton transformed them from an 80's pop/rock (albeit a good one) band to one of the most cutting edge and genre leading alternative metal bands of the 90's is amazing.

He is one f**ked up guy, but fitted FNM perfectly. Angel Dust is still my No.1 album of all time...

Obviously the Stereophonics are good, but Feeder were very good too (supported 'Phonics last time I saw them) and I'm sure I've seen the Manics at Reading 97... maybe they were on Saturday... dunno...

See Feeder at the Army and Navy in about '93, only about 60 of us in there - quality gig!! Always enjoy seeing them. Manic's at the Royal Albert Hall was my favourite one of theirs. Got dragged to Stereophonics at Wembley Arena a couple of years back, and was pleasently surprised - they rocked! Although their support were even better (just wish I could remember their name!!!).

See Green Day at Reading - only one band better for the entertainment value, and that's Weezer! Better than stand-up!!

Ever seen Terrorvision? They're quality live - and Skunk Anansie, that's a band who's album's were sooooo poor when put next to them live...

Ah yea! Terrorvision were great too (again at Reading 97). The lead singer (Tony?) was completely off his face and really got the crowd going.

Green Day were excellent and I would definately hunt them down to see them again - after watching them, everyone was grinning ear-to-ear, especially the last song, King For A Day, where you had loads of guys in customes running around playing trumpets and then the legendary setting fire to the drum kit... great stuff!

Oh, one to watch for if you can get to a date is "CKY" who are touring here very soon. Great band who will have the place rocking... think they are playing the London Forum for 2 nights...

1. Sting, Ephesus, Turkey, 1993
2. Roy Ayers, Ronnie Scott's, 1996
3. Lakatos, Ronnie Scott's, 2000
4. Outside, Jazz Cafe, 2000
5. Massive Attack, Finsbury Park, 1997

Been to bigger gigs - Aerosmith (Wembley Arena), Oasis (Gateshead), Jamiroquai (Brixton Academy), Shaggy (Wembley Arena) - but I'd rate those as my top 5. *For those who are unaware of him, I urge you to go to Ronnie Scott's to hear Roy Ayers - the man is a legend.

Ah man, how could I forget Aerosmith!?

I went to the all dayer at Wembley Stadium, supported by Stereophonics, Lenny Crabsticks and ... someone else... Anyway, great day...

Also got dragged to Bon Jovi at Wembley Stadium by a girl a used to work with who was dead fit. Thought I'd cop off for sure, but we got seperated in the crowd :-(

Anyway, Bon Jovi were pretty good and well supported by Van Halen... great days...

Much as I hate to admit it, Robbie Williams at Knebworth was a damn good day out, especially for the performances of The Darkness and Moby in the warm-up. (Quite literally because it got up to something like 35°C!) And Jools Holland a couple of weeks ago was an excellent night out.

Christ, I've seen so many gigs over the years it's hard to name 1 let alone 5.

But 2 that stick in the mind are:

Manics, Dec '94, Astoria, last ever gig with Richey before he disappeared, smashed all their equipment at the end and threw it into the crowd.

Supergrass, Jan '98, Shepherds Bush Empire, just a great live band and the only booze sold was cans of Red Stripe or, er, that was it! Vaguely remember playing football on the train home with a rolled up copy of the Sun.................... http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Oasis - Wemb Arena
Reef - V98
Travis - V2000 (I think)
Michael Jackson - Wemb Stadium
Britney Spears - Wemb Arena (That girls really can move)
Coldplay - One of the V weekends
Texas - Another of the V weekends

And the worst without any doubt is No Way Sis, I have never heard such a poor effort to sing/play Oasis songs in my life. Also All Saints were toilet, but then I guess everyone knew that.

My most disapointing was probably The Verve, who headlined at the V98 festival.

After being into the whole Verve thing at that time, they stood up there, completely characterless, without saying a word to the crowd, groaned their way through the set and walked off... very poor...

U_S, I've seen the Spice Girls. And I flew down especially to see them. But then again, it was part of a Guy's Hospital drinking event...

Most disappointing- Mansun, followed by Jewel. And Masta Ace.

Best- there's so many-

The Blockheads (with a special appearance by Wee Willie Harris) in 2001?
U2- both big concerts (98? and 02?) were top-notch
Stones- 94 at Wembley- good, spoiled by the fact my favourite band at the time, the Black Crowes, cried off due to the rain
Ronny Jordan at the Jazz Cafe
De La Soul/Tribe Called Quest/PM Dawn- Wembley 91
Essential Festival 2001
Edwin Starr- 2003 (one of his last, RIP)
Electric Six- 2003

An appropriate sound for a jazz gag, I thought.

Outside are a not-very-well-known band (which is a huge shame) who were signed to the Jazz/Funk/Dance label Dorado in the '90s. Inspired by Matt Cooper, their ridiculously talented pianist, they churned out a number of albums, some of which I have.

He was actually, VS. *Can't say I'm a massive fan; but a mate of mine (who is a Shaggy fan) had no one else to go with, so I went with him. *Shaggy is a consummate performer and has brilliant stage presence. *It was a pretty good gig - by no means the worst I've gone to.

On the other hand Mis-teeq, his warm up act, were surprisingly ropey.

Forgot to mention Del Amitri, who I saw at Shepherd's Bush last year. *Bloody brilliant.

Worst gig I've ever been to? *Jamiroquai, Brixton Academy - no question. *He lost his brass section, because he had fallen out with them before the gig, and so he appeared to compensate for this by (it seemed to me) taking copious amounts of charlie. *He was rubbish, the band were listless, and they simply went through the motions. *Hugely disappointing.

At least he wasn't the sole reason for being there - it was a "Don't Give Up Rwanda" gig, and Gil Scott-Heron, who had opened up proceedings, had played a stormer. *This had been followed up by an African band (very good in an Andy Kershaw sort of way) and then, in a moment of true surreality, China Black playing "You're Mine". *Weird.

Was also there for the Toxic Twin Towers Ball. Guys you forgot about the opening band 3 Colours Red. Must admit was not to struck by Stereophonics a very boring set, static except kicking a ball into the crowd, musically ok but live performances should not be just about the music.

Best Live Perfomances

Guns N Roses - Monsters of Rock 1988 (Appetite for Destruction Tour was about 5th on the list)

Good skills, not my number 1 but certainly in my top 5. If you like Patton you should check out some of his other works (Mr Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk).

As for live gigs, well:

2000 - Orbital, Hammersmith Palais
Their only gig of 2000 and what a night. Faced with a club full of pill popping weirdos I did the only thing I could do - sank enough Stella to stun a rhino and lost myself in some of the most original and beautiful dance music you'll ever hear.

1993 - Anthrax, Unknown Venue
Secret gig in front of 150 fans in a tiny pub/club, can't remember where it was or how we spawned tickets for it but it was like having them playing in your living room. I even got to strum Scott Ian's guitar!

1991 - Pearl Jam, Esplanade
Still one of my favourite acts to date, this was their first ever gig in the UK at the seafront pub that I'm sure we've all frequented. The stunning single Alive had just been released from their debut album Ten and whilst I can't really remember whether they played particularly well, it certainly was a most excellent evenings entertainment (and once again I got w***ered).

1993 - Rage Against the Machine, Kentish Town & Country Club
Came home covered in cuts and bruises but it was worth it, one of the most intense gigs I've been to. Never felt so at one with a crowd as when 'Killing in the Name of....' came on!

1992 - Monsters of Rock, Donnington
A fantastic day, WASP (hilarious), Slayer (Awesome), Thunder (meh), Skid Row (surprisingly good) and my all time favourites Iron Maiden. Got separated from my crowd during moshing to Slayer but didn't diminish my enjoyment of the day.

Loads of others I could mention, Black Crowes 1992 (supported by The Verve who were rubbish!), Iron Maiden 1988, Metallica 1991 and Pantera 1993 all stand out in the mind

Disappointments?
Megadeth, 1992 - Mustaine going through the motions (though Pantera in support were fantastic)
Xtreme, 1991 - What was I thinking?
Leftfield, 2000 - Came to the Cliffs and were incredibly disappointing, almost ruined my perception on the genius that is Leftism

Good skills, not my number 1 but certainly in my top 5. If you like Patton you should check out some of his other works (Mr Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk).
Yea, got a lot of those, but suprisingly dont really like them (even though I have a brotherly-love for Mike Patton!)

Some of Mr Bungle is OK, I've not heard a huge amount of Fantomas and Tomahawk were a disapointment to me.

Still, beats Jim Martins solo stuff! *Sheesh!*

Can only be glad that Roddy Bottum (great name for a homosexual) hasnt released a hammond-organ compilation...

Apologies for being dense, but what does "meh" mean...?!

It makes me chuckle when I see it, even though I've no idea what it means...

Bit MOR but here goes

1. Queen - Magic Tour at Wembley Stadium 1986
For all of you who put Queen as a band they would have loved to have seen, you are so right. Fantastic concert, Freddie at his absolute best. Buy the double CD, you don't get all the atmosphere, but you get the best live music ever !

2. Texas - Wembley Arena (2001?)
Every song right on the money, including Sharlene performing Put Your Arms Around Me with just an acoustic guitar for company.

3. Bjorn Again - Shepherd's Bush 1996 + 1997.
For pure entertainment value and also for seeing people that you would never imagine seeing at an ABBA concert http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

4. Celine Dion - Caeser's Palace, Las Vegas 2003 - A New Day
Bit more of a show rather than a concert, still has a voice that sends shivers up my spine, stunning special effects and dancing (Cirque de Soleil) and also it was only a 5 minute walk back to our hotel room (we were staying next door in The Bellagio), far better than taking 2 hours to get home from London http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

5. Elton John - Hylands House (2001)
Just Elton and a piano, also played my 2 favourite tracks - Tonight, and The Greatest Discovery.

Have to agree - saw them at V a few years back - they were headlining and I had a choice of Texas or Muse and went for the former. They were just fantastic and I've never been a huge fan of theirs.

Another that sticks in my mind is Skunk Anansie at Phoenix festival about 4 or 5 years ago (possibly longer - can't quite remember). The base player falling off the stage as he took a step forward, the crowd fell into a hush and people gasped - he climbed back up on stage, announced he'd broken his guitar and promptly continued with the set! Classic - Skin was fantastic live too - fab voice.

I would also like to add that the Swinging Blue Jeans/Freddy and the Dreamers/Other random has-been acts from the 60's/70's concert I was taken to when I was 15 which was forced upon me was also great fun!!!
