View Full Version : Essex v Derbyshire
Very good days play yesterday and continuing today, bowled Derby out for 184 and we're now 202-1 with Pettini not out on 89.
The ODI is going rather well too!

Both Pettini and Tudor have reached 100. 276-1, excellent stuff.
Meanwhile Pakistan are 108-7.

Think Derbyshire got about 184 and are in deep deep trouble in the second innings. Looks like a timely boost for the Essex promotion charge.

Latest 132/7, back in to 2nd place for Essex. With 1 match to go.

Not sure about timely boost - more like a "must win", given that Worcestershire beat Leicestershire at Grace Road on Saturday, putting them second in the table at the moment... and only two go up this season (I think that's the case).
As things stand, wrapping up victory in this game really ought to be a fomality - we've only got three wickets to take, and all the time and runs in the world to take them.
So, the victory in this game will get us 20 points (8 bonus points plus the twelve for the win), which will put us two points ahead of Worcestershire going into the final game of the season.
We're away at Leicestershire and Worcs are away at Northamptonshire. Should be a jolly intriguing final round of matches - and one that is too close to call in terms of picking which county will go up; although I'd argue that the "Pears" are playing better than we are at the moment.
Secretly, torrential rain across the whole of the UK for that week would not be too bad for us... those two little points which we have in the bank may yet make all the difference...

Discraceful!!
You should want to play your way out of the league, not go up with mother natures help
If you played as well as Surrey this season you too would of been celebrating promotion with 2 games to go http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

We have the small matter of our crown as Sunday League champions to defend, unlike certain other clubs we could mention. It's the price of spreading ourselves a little thinly, I guess...

We got 22 points for the victory (14 points for a win), therefore we are 4 points clear of Worcestershire going into the last round of matches.

Ahh, good stuff. In truth, that means that so long as (a) we pick up most of either our batting (likeliest) or our bowling points; and (b) do no worse, in terms of our result, than Worcs... then we ought to be in the driving seat for promotion.
That draw with them recently, despite them having much the better of the game, looks to be the pivotal point of the season.

Basically, if we score 350 runs at Grace Road next week and match Worcestershire's result, that will be that! The Championship is determined by points, then most wins (currently 7-7), then fewest losses (we have lost 3 compared to Worcs' 4) and then most runs (given that we have more batting bonus points, that should in theory be Essex again).
Recent results vs. Leicestershire @ Grace Road:
2005: Match Drawn (Essex 297 & 80-2, Leics 382)
2004: Essex (322 & 272) beat Leics (197 & 342) by 48 runs
2003: Match Drawn (Essex 181 & 191, Leics 201 & 104-5)
2001: Essex (318) beat Leics (104 & 205) by an innings and 9 runs
1998: Leics (395) beat Essex (95 & 201) by an innings and 99 runs
And for good measure, recent results between Worcs and Northants at Wantage Road:
2005: Northants (299 & 364) beat Worcs (381 & 200) by 82 runs
2004: Worcs (292 & 152-1) beat Northants (177 & 264) by 9 wickets
2003: Northants (196 & 379) beat Worcs (172 & 311) by 92 runs
2002: Match Drawn (Worcs 524-8 dec, Northants 614-5 dec)
2000: Northants (519) beat Worcs (249 & 198) by an innings and 72 runs.

I can see it all going "pear-shaped" with Worcestershire reording a victory and Essex failing to capitalise on being in the driving seat.
Also, the Pro 40 is by no means tied-up. Durham are an accident waiting to happen, and Sussex could well pounce. http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
