Definitely some good things to take from the day, particularly in the second half. Once again a switch off period cost us dear in the first half but we're getting there.....

Anyway. The game. Err. Well. The less said the better.

We have some very good individuals but they need to play in a position they enjoy/they are good at. We need a win ... and soon!

If I am totally honest, I am starting to get concerned at the fact we are not and have not played as a team. We havent won and I also think our shot ratio is now where near good enough. If we are not carefull next season will creep up on us and we will have made no progress. I dont know what the answer is. Perhaps training needs to be looked at again? I spoke to a few people after the game and I am of the opinion that we shouldnt be having a kickabout/ mini game at the end of training. We should be having defence against attack. One goal. That way the defence work together along with the goalkeeper and the attackers and wingers play together and get used to one another.
Thoughts anyone?
ps. Hands up i you think I kicked like a girl in the second half today. http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

As for the game, it was similar to every game we have played in that we have played well for periods of the game, but not for the WHOLE match. There are way to many individual errors going on as well which could easily be cut out with a bit more concentration.

Kinda agree with Wayne's point about shots on target, although we did score today and Rob had 2 or 3 good chances to score in the second half but was denied by some brave goalkeeping.

Anyway, back to football. We lost 8-1. Wayne is right. We individually have some very good players but people are being played out of position and we arent working as a team. Once again we had another 10 minute spell of conceding 4 goals and that really f**ked us up. Their supposed 3rd goal didnt do much good either (cos it wasnt in!!) and confidence dropped.

The second half was an improvement although it couldnt get much worse. If anyone has any ideas just post them. Its also a shame that a few team members didnt show. Im sure the new rule will come into affect on this matter as well. Its better to say what you really think of your chest. Thats what i think anyway ...

Lets not forget what a brilliant day most of us had on Saturday. A good 'team building' exercise, IMO ...

Team building exercises are all well and good when the people taking part in them actually turn up to be part of the team when it matters, like a cold Sunday morning when it is ****ing down non-stop for a game. *http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

i have to agree with what kev said earlier about people getting played in their prefered postions, although i would jump at the chance to play at all and i will never question the manager when he decides where to put me, i was very uncomfortable at right back yesterday, but maybe thats just due to lack of experience in that position.
Heads up though, as said before we do have like 6 months to improve

I think that dodgy goal was the clincher - we all felt it had'nt gone in, even the Linesman said it did'nt, but that was the one where heads dropped I feel.

I think we had a fair few chances but they were'nt taken quickly enough - like SUFC we were trying to walk it into the net when maybe a "hit and hope" would have been better, given the conditions.

I also agree that people from now on should state their preferred position and we STICK WITH IT.

But well done to all those that showed up, that was a real test of character. It would've been very easy to say "f**k it", what with the weather and the heavy night before.

Just a few thoughts on the game on Sunday.
I think we have to all understand that these games are friendlies, yes we do need a win but we played a team top of a division even if it is div 5 they are still top and I am sure they are beating teams every week.
We also have to understand that we are playing players in different positions to see who can play where, we all might think we know who should be playing where but as the manager you have to look at every option and when players let you down at the last minute you have to change things.
We also try to give every player a game no matter how good they are, the club has to decide if this is the right way to go or do we play are best team every game?.
As to the game we let are selves down again with a 15 min spell that let in three or four goals the secound half was much better and the inclusion of Mr B and GNH really did help and we gave them a better game.
On a personell note I was gutted to go off after only 10-15 mins but the news is not very good I am on crutches for some time and will be out for 8-10 weeks as I have torn the Muscle in my calf and at this moment in time I am considering hanging the old boots up for good I will be 41 in 14 weeks and the old body does not heal very quickly and I am totaly, totaly fu---d off.
Next season is a long way off and I will see how it goes but I am still commited to the club 120% if I play or not I will still be involved one way or the other.
Lets keep it going boys things WILL improve we have to stick together and things will work out in the end, there are to many people in the club who want to make it work and it WILL work.

Guys, sorry for my non-attendance on Sunday, but could hardly breath!! Think the shouting at the Rugger and footy has finally put paid to my chances of becoming the fifth tenor!!
A brief trip to A&E at the hospital only to see a cue that would take forever to clear convinced me that I was better off going home and drinking lots of fluids to open my throat.
Well it's now Tuesday and can confirm I still have not got my voice totally back, and my throat feels like cr*p.
My aim is to be fit when we have our next game, so I will be doing some running in the evenings to get a bit fitter and hopefully not injure myself when I eventually get to play again.

Firstly a message to Colin. I really am absolutely gutted for you mate. I've always said the next serious injury will be time for me to hang the boots up. Most people have been pleading with me to do it for years anyway. http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Don't make any snap decisions on the playing side just yet. I've come back after the torn hamstring just as up for 90 mins on a Sunday morning as I ever was. One way or another I hope that you will play a major part in the development of SZFC in one way or another. Hopefully this will be in a playing capacity because your experience is invaluable to the SZFC youth.

Now to my thoughts on Sunday's game.

Looking on the positive side again we do still attempt to play some decent football but the conditions on Sunday were crying out for early balls to the front men and long shots to test out their keeper and we did neither. There is also an abundance of youth in our team that are still coming to terms with making the transition to mens football and who are still developing confidence in their own ability and body mass!

Is playing people "out of position" the problem? *I'm prepared to accept this criticism but I'd much rather experiment now than in seven or eight months time. Also just because you've always been a forward or always been a right midfielder doesn't necessarily make it your best position. Defence isn't my best position but at my age I can't get through 90 minutes in midfield !

Is not playing a settled side the problem ? Possibly a contributory factor but we have over 20 playing members of the club with at least 17-18 players for each friendly we've had. I have no intention of making people stand on the sidelines for 90 minutes at this stage in our development. If everyone drew up their suggested starting eleven you'd be surprised how much different each would be.

A common theme in most games we play is that there always seems to be a 10-15 minute period where we switch off, panic and effectively lose the game. Letting in a couple of quick goals happens at all standards of football but we need to learn how to deal with it.

We now have two more than competent goalkeepers (neither can take a bluddee goalkick though http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

Out of the three outfield areas I think defensively we're not too bad and we have a number of people that can fill full back positions. We could do with more options at centre back. Kev's already demonstrated he can perform there but I believe he's better suited elsewhere.

In midfield there are numerous people that have demonstrated they can play left or right side and we have plenty of attacking midfielders. I believe we are lacking a defensive midfielder - a Paul Ince, Roy Keane or Robbie Savage to get stuck in when the going gets tough.

Up front we're not scoring enough goals, partly because we're not creating enough chances.

I'm glad we have an open forum to discuss what we think went wrong. Most other clubs don't have this opportunity, so please keep the suggestions and comments coming.

Most importantly though there is no need to PANIC at this stage of SZFC. Everyone from the committee, to the entire squad, to those supporters who have (madly) kept faith with us has shown a genuine commitment to make SZFC a success when it would be all too easy to say sod it and not bother.

Patience will bring its reward. We will keep going back to the drawing board for as long as is necessary.

Da gaffer.
