KP out for the series with a fractured rib.

Freddie bowls a remarkable 11 wides in the first over of Australia's reply chasing 243!

Australia 187-2 and cruising home.

Must've been a heck of bouncer.

Ho hum.

Apparently it wasn't a bouncer, he was dancing down the pitch to McGrath to try and put him off his length.

I believe England have 3 international class one-day players. One is now out injured with fractured ribs, one is mentally ill and the third sounds like he has the yips if he sent down 11 wides in one over.

And there I was thinking we could get to the super sixes stage of the Cup.

I thought McGrath had quit?

Some beauties on the BBC text comentary -

"12... 26... 19... 4... 7... 53... 13... 28... 1... 6... 10... That's not the England scorecard, that's my Chinese takeaway order for tomorrow night!"
Matt, Birmingham

"I have just been given a copy of Australia's plans for the one-day series:
1) Bowl line and length and some wicket-taking balls
2) Score lots of runs quickly with plenty of sixes
Hope this helps the England team."
George Walker

"Do you think the English team are aware that no-one back home is watching any more?" - NO!

To be fair 11 wides isn't as bad as it sounds, there were 2 lots of 5 wides that Nixon failed to take cleanly.

Still 3 wides in one over which is pretty poor for an international class bowler when we're trying to defend a mediocre total.

Oh, agreed. But it's a lot better than 11.

As CCC says, Foster has to be the man.

Relieved to hear Freddy wasn't doing a Harmy.

In 2002 I remember Harmy bowled a 13 ball over in a warm-up game. By Perth he was virtually stopping in his run-up before delivering the ball. I think this actually impressed Fletcher as it took some character to keep running in when he was so clearly out of sorts.

I think England's tactics in this series will be to bat first, so to try and limit the mental scarring on the bowlers that they would face if they had to bowl the full allotment of overs at the Australians.

I may even throw my hat into the ring to replace/assist Duncan Fletcher. I have achieved a fair bit of success in the one-day format in battrick and feel that I could surely add something to the England ODI set-up. I could hardly make us less competitive in ODIs.

We'va always batted first given the choice HKB.

Foster is a good shout, but if we're to do what the Aussies have done the Prior of Sussex is the only choice.

Nixon, Read and Prior are the World Cup wickies. Lord knows what we're going to do in the field - the only out and out bowlers that are somewhere near good in the squad are the likes of Giles and Monty.

Bloody Vaughn injured AGAIN though.

Same one-day failings again. We had NZ in trouble at 76-5 but failed to press home the advantage (attack, attack, attack!). The gamble of Loye fails to come off, Bell then gets bogged down - again - and then Strauss (why is he opening not nurdling in the middle order?) goes cheap. Collingwood then gets bogged down then gets out which means Flintoff has to been sensible and try and nudge rather than bludgeon.

This was one of the few one-day games England have a chance of winning, as we only seem able to win batting second chasing scores of under 220.

Another stellar performance developing. NZ rack up 318 with 50 runs coming off the final 22 balls off the innings. England rack up 37 extras including a remarkable 22 wides.

Ed Joyce hit 66 from 82 balls in reply but with 4 wickets now down the run rate is starting to get away from us:

New Zealand 318/7 (50 ov)
England 153/4 (32.0 ov)

England require another 166 runs with 6 wickets and 18.0 overs remaining

England RR 4.78
Last 5 ovs 18/1 RR 3.60
Required RR 9.22
New Zealand RR 6.36

Could it happen?

End of over 30 (4 runs) - Australia 160/5 (133 runs required from 20 overs, RR: 5.33, RRR: 6.65)

CL White 13* (19b) MS Panesar 6-0-33-0
NW Bracken 10* (14b 1x4) RS Bopara 4-0-19-1

In case you're not aware Symonds has retired hurt so really it's 6 down.

Effectivley 7 down now as Freddie has just got rid of Cameron White#

7 down now, Bracken's out. McGrath walking to the crease, Symonds will not bat again. We could even get a bonus point (have to keep them below 233)

Wahoo! We won by 92 runs.

The fresh blood in Ed Joyce and Liam Plunkett do the business!

Also good to see Ravi make his England debut 7* off 5 balls and 4-0-19-1 isn't a bad start, particularly when that wicket is Mr Not Out himself, Hussey.

As I understand it, we can beat the Aussies and the New Zealanders by twenty million runs, but it won't get us to the final unless we get a bonus point in the wins.

Wow! We've actually won a game! Hopefully Joyce's ton will give him the confidence to believe he belongs in the international arena. Bopara's in which is good, just need a recall for Foster to make things even better...
