View Full Version : "A big cheer at the civic center"

Kenny

.....according to Paul Fitz on the SUFC mailing list.

Although this could mean anything, most likely it's just Ron or someone working the crowd

(just posted this in another topic that I think Shags just removed)

Just spoken to someone there and he said they are currently just going through the motions. Has no idea what the big cheer was either and has been there the last couple of hours!

Although said there was more outside earlier, but now 150 max who are freezing theirs ****s off...

Could hear the guy from the speaker, and sounded very dull !! Reckons it could be a while before the decision....

With the size of our squad, 1 minibus would have sufficed!

*** UPDATE ***

Roger Weaver comes to window encouraging supporters outside to sing up waving scarf.

A chorus of "sit down shut up" followed, aimed towards the speaker at that time moaning about the flats being built there!

Not sure that the chant was too helpful, but rather amusing to hear it outside Civic Centre!!

One Roy McDonagh

Keep the faith.,..if it doesnt happen today it is only a matter of time before it gets approved.

Good stuff, although I'm not sure football chants are going to sway the decision, which may or may not be a good thing :)

I don't think they can hear from inside the council chamber.

Just got back. Left civic centre at 2.45 and there was no singing whatsover up until that point (except when players arrived at 1.45), just a couple of hundred cold shrimpers trying to hear whats said on the tannoy.

Lots of dull discussions about retail units when I left and sounded like it was going to go on for hours yet.

I didnt see Eastwood. Wasnt paying that much attention though.

Bumped into Mark Gower at the coffee stand and he didnt sound confident but to be fair he said he couldnt hear/understand most of what was being discussed. Must be pretty boring for them, still at least they had a seat inside!

I left there about 2.50. Nothing was happening of any substance. It seems on first blush that the council officials were questioning the club's figures re retail space, and that this was a bit of a problem as the numbers didnt add up. Saw Gower and JCR milling around outisde on thier mobiles, quite obviously bored with the whole thing! JCR did have nice rhythms on, tho!!!

Folks, it's only the first step ...

Indeed. I have no doubt that the finances are there/can be raised given the potential profit in this for Ron.

But the permission of Rochford Council is equally important, so I'm lead to believe, due to water/drainage facilties that will be on Rochford land. Without these, the new stadium may not be economically viable (due to the extra money that would need to be spent on water/drainage for the stadium).

Sod Rochford. I think their rejection is pretty much inevitable, I'm afraid. The question is, what do we do from that point? Can we still go ahead without the car park and training pitches? I rather think not, but I'm sure Ron realises that.

Indeed. It is vital that as many Rochford borough residents as possible get themselves down to Rayleigh tomorrow night and do the same all over again, I have no doubt that supporters helped influence the decision of councillors today.

If you are a resident of Rochford borough I recommend you send a well-written email to your local member of the planning committee and advise them which way they should be voting tomorrow night.

"Southend United are given the green light for a brand new stadium following 4 years of hard work from the club. Ron Martin is delighted with the news.

Southend United plan to start work on the new stadium on the Fosset's Farm site, following the go ahead from an inquiry.

Ron Martin told the club's official website "This is the culmination of four years hard work for us."

"We always felt there would be a positive outcome but you can never be certain as these things are something of a lottery.

"It's very positive for the club though and for the town of Southend as well, so it came as no surprise that they've backed the plans.

"We're delighted. It's a massive boost for us and I feel this new stadium complex will bring further success to Southend United.

"This is an opportunity to make sure Southend United has a future because we've been treading water over the past four years but that will change.""

Veerrrry different. Brighton's ground was approved by Brighton & Hove council, when in fact it was discovered that most of the site was in Lewes. In addition, the site for Brighton's ground is stated to be an area of outstanding natural beauty, which ours isn't.

Pretty sure Ruth Kelly gets to look at all stadium applications as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government - they're automatically "called in". However, provided that the council has followed all pre-existing laws and regulations governing the basis on which they approved the planning application, I can't see how or why Ruth Kelly would overturn the council's decision.

I think Ron has played a canny game, here. I think it's vitally important that just as many fans turn up tomorrow. At the end of the day, councillors are politicians. If you've got hundreds of electors (irrespective of whether or not they're wearing the blue of Southend) sitting there, listening to you deliberate... that's a powerful effect. You'll think long and hard before saying "no".

So, all you Blues who live in Rochford council area... turn up tomorrow!

In short the FF development can and will go ahead regardless of tomorrows outcome. It was stated at today's meeting that any arrangements re: on Rochford land can and probably would be amended should it be rejected.

The training pitches aren't the stumbling block, the 200 odd car parking spaces are however and they can be incorporated elsewhere withing the project should it be necessary.

Chill, mate - I think Mike is expressing concern (that many of us share) that the Rochford councillors might not be quite so "on message" as the Southend Councillors evidently were as to the virtues of the stadium application.

That's why it's important that everyone turns up tomorrow. The Rochford Councillors might need some gentle reminding as to just how many electors are directly involved in and affected by their decision.

This is democracy in action, folks - power to the people, but the people need to turn up to show that they truly have the power.

NO!

Read what I posted again, will you? Stop jumping to idiotic conclusions.

I was merely pointing out a statement from Ron Martin, chairman of Southend United Football Club, in which he claimed that both proposals had to be approved if the stadium development was to go ahead! After all the stress of waiting for this announcement from Southend Borough Council, I suggested that we're going to have to go through it all over again tomorrow evening as Rochford District Council deliberates!

I have IN MY HAND a copy of the Development Control Committee agenda - Item 4 - in which the proposal for the training pitches and car-park is considered and - on page 48 - are the words: "it is proposed that this Committee RESOLVES to REFUSE the application ..."

Now, unless you want me to get busy with the tippex and remove this, I am highlighting the fact that we've won the first battle this afternoon but a second even bigger battle is to come tomorrow; we shouldn't get carried away because it's not over yet.

Is that boring enough for you?!

Regarding RBC's influence on this, I'm with Phil and not just because I'm called Phil.

I doubt the club would be so forthright with it on the main website unless this decision is key. I think the urging of supporters to attend the RBC hearing is still important but probably not a dealbreaker. After all, even if they restrict training ground availability, there will still be a stadium there.

Mainly though, the presentation of the news on the OS seems decisive in my mind.

How long will it take now that she has to decide it then???

Usually takes up to 2 months from the time she receives all the paperwork from Southend Borough Council (via the Department of Communities and Local Government).

Only when she has (hopefully) decided to let Southend Borough Council determine the application AND both SUFC and the Council have signed the Section 106 legal agreement (to agree our contributions towards goodness knows what!) will we actually receive formal planning consent.

In essence the completion of the legal agreements can continue whilst the Secretary of State is considering the matter - provided Ron is willing to take the risk of incurring legal fees.

Trust me, today's decision was taken with certain provisions being put in place regarding local parking, travelling arrangements on match days and space in certain areas of the development.

RC can, and probably will, take the same decision with the plans submitted to them. As I said before and was mentioned at today's meeting, the stumbling block as far as RC is concerned is not the training pitches as such but the 200 parking spaces located on green belt land. For them to put the kybosh on this whole project because of 200 car parking spaces would, IMO, be suicidal and I expect them to ok the application with certain provisions being made.

But that's just my opinion.
