Norton Internet Security & Router

Just brought a wireless LAN router last night. Fantastically easy to do and allowed me to watch the Chelsea game downstairs, whilst working & surfing on broadband... lovely stuff!

Anyway, I was using Norton Internet Security as a firewall previously, but the new router (Netgear) has a built in firewall and running NIS doesnt allow me access to the t'internet.

Anyone know how to configure NIS to run alongside a hardware firewall? I could find out eventually, just wondered if anyone knew off the top of their heads...

I'd just use the one on teh router to be honest ! Hardware firewalls are trickier to overcome . And to be honest anyone whos put in the time and effort to get through them isnt going to be stoped by NIS !

Well, NIS stops pop-up ads, so I guess I'll just get a software pop-up stopper...

I really wish I understood what all that meant, because it sounds really useful. But you might as well be speaking Greek, since I would have the same level of appreciation and understanding of what you've just said...

If you download the google toolbar, that stops pop ups as well

Yea, and probably installs spy-ware for what you are searching for...

I turned NIS off this morning so I could get access to the net, went to Yahoo and searched for:-

"Hardware Firewall with Norton Security"

Got a full Internet page (i.e. one you 'cannot close' http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif ) advertising Norton 2004 popping up before any search results...

Least NIS is very good at stopping things like that

for any pages you can't close (i.e. porn), just press alt and f4 together at the same time. This does it without need for hitting x in the top-right hand corner.

Oh yeah and if you press ctrl+enter at same time, it adds www.com to the address on the browser- saves a bit of time.

Oh yea, I know that - actually I normally just press the 'Windows' key to bring the task back up and close it from there.

For NIS 2003

Double click on the globe shape in the task bar to bring up the configuration screen.
Click on "personal firewall"
click on the configure button
click on the home networking tab, there is a wizard there to assist you.



To stop a full screen window loading fully - press the esc key
To close a full screen window - press ctrl + w
