View Full Version : If You Had to Ban 3 Sports

If you were the PM, and had to ban 3 sports that are played in Britain on a regular basis from ever being played in any professional form, which would they be?
Me? Bowls, Horse Racing and Golf - If there are 3 sports that are less boring and pointless, I beg you, point them out.

horse racing is not what would call a sport really, its all about the betting now
golf is great
i'd choose bowls, hockey and rugby union

Cricket, tennis and F1 - In my opinion, all are incredibly dull sports, cricket particularly. I appreciate that there are few on this board who do like it, but they need to appreciate that there are a lot more people who don't and stop being so arrogant about it ... which doesn't help ...
And cue the negative rep ... yawn! ...

As far as RU nicking RL players the boot is on the other foot these days.
Got to agree about F1, Synchronised sodding swimming & ice skating.

Rugby League - Just a bunch of northerners humping the floor when they get tackled.
American Football - I haven't got the patience for the stop-start aspect of the game, and they all wear pads.
Heavyweight Boxing - Two big blokes waddle around the ring, hug abit and occasionally throw a punch. The lighter weights are much more exciting.

Every single form of motor sports. Not a sport, its just driving.

Rugby League - Not a man's game
American Football - The point of this sport is what exactly? Very dull to watch.
Bowls - Loads of people in Cheltenham play it. What a load of rubbish.
Others that could come into it are Show Jumping, Tennis, Polo and Fishing.

Horse Racing - as much of a sport as motor racing. I.e. it's not. It's also very boring unless you're a taking a punt on one of the horses.
Golf - good for insomniacs. The most entertainment to be had by watching it derives from trying to work out the scoreboard as the coverage jumps from hole to hole...
American Football - I watched (or tried to) some of this when I was in the US a couple of years ago, and I don't see what they get so excited about. All those stoppages just make it tiresome.

Can't agree with those wanting to band gridiron.
It only doesn't make sense if you don't understand the basic rules and the concept of the game.
Think Chess but played out on a field with 22 players who all have different roles to play. I used to play defensive end i a junior team when I was about 15 for a couple of years & even in a realtively simple position like that it's scary what you need to know in terms of tactics.

Bowls - Old mans boring sport
American Football - Football that doesnt use feet... and dont understand the rules
Show Jumping - A sport mainly for royals, only on TV because of said fact

Basketball - Just awful; the type of sport that takes all the joy out of scoring because it happens every 15 seconds. What's the point in that?
Erm, that's it. I'll watch anything else.

American Football - boring and crap
Boxing - barbaric
Hunting (all types) - only the toffs call these sports, but they should all stop now. No exceptions and no bending the rules. Anyone caught breaking the law becomes fair game themselves

Hunting (all types)
On a fieldtrip on Pendine Sands last year, we all saw a load of hunters on the beach exercising their dogs. The amount of grief & abuse we (Physical Geography students) gave them was unbelieveble, but they bloody deserve that.
I should have put that in as my number one sport I hate.

Top man. Any sport that needs a Wurlitzer in the corner to create atmosphere is clearly morally bankrupt.
Rugby League. Sorry, I just find it deeply disturbing and bordering on the homoerotic. Men in shorts which are way too tight lie on top of each other and then writhe on the ground. That is just plain wrong.
Greco-Roman Wrestling. See above. It's like Rugby League's dirty foreign cousin... it's writhing around in Borat's swimming costume.

Golf - How can this be classed as a sport, swinging a metal pole around and walking around on the grass all day doesnt sound like much of a sport to me....its more of a "leisure time" activity. Plus they wear silly clothes.....
Snooker - This so called sport is as boring as these "non sports" come. Seeing that big green table appear as I turn over the TV is enough to haunt me. Again, it is more of a leisurely activity, which requires skill as opposed to stamina or any kind of athleticism.
Bowls - OAPs on a lawn throwing around heavy balls is never a sport, who the hell decided that?! How their fraile little twiggy arms even manage to lift the balls up I will never know.
I would define a sport as something that requires either, stamina, strength, speed and athelticism, or a combination of a few of them. I have no doubt that potting snooker balls all day is hard work.....but it surely isn't as hard on the body as football or rugby....

It might not be as hard on the body physically but it is mentally. You could argue that alot more skill is involved in snooker than football, afterall all you do in football is kick a ball something that doesn't require much skill while in snooker you've got to think a few shots ahead about positioning etc.
Personally I enjoy both, but the above was something that was argued in my philosophy class, you just have to ask yourself what constitutes a sport?

Basketball - bounce, bounce, bounce, basket. Other teams turn: bounce, bounce, bounce, basket.
Ice skating - if I want to see sliding around in pretty skirts, and tight trousers I'll go to any High Street in the country at 2 a.m. to see girls and boys slipping in their own vomit.
American Football - cannot stand it when you heasr men saying on a Monday morning, did you see the 'Packers' against the 'Dolphins' last night.

I dont think that David Beckham would appreciate that! The precision that he can deliver the ball to other players is amazing and very skillful.
I wouldnt say that all you do in football is kick a ball, it is actually a far more complex game if you take into account tactics, set pieces etc.

I'm very open minded when it comes to sport and enjoy most sporting contests but can't understand the appeal of the following:
Basketball - I've time for most US sports (American football and baseball are actually fascinating sports) but I find basketball monotonous. Some of the plays are incredibly athletic and look great on a highlights reel, but sport is as much about the contest as the highlights and between the highlights its just dull. Being open-minded I actually went to see two of the top college sides play and even live it didn't do much for me. I was quite impressed by the cheerleaders, mind.
Golf - a good walk (and good countryside) ruined. I've never been to watch, but have played and it just doesn't interest me.
Any "sport" involving horses - I'm a fan of gambling and a day out at the races is a good day out, but get annoyed when horse-racing use to interrupt the cricket coverage. If betting was banned horse-racing would die, which means its the betting part of it which is interesting, not the horse-racing, and cricket-fghting could easily take the place of horse-racing. Prancing around on a horse (equestarianism - sp?) is basically pointless.
As a bonus (because all 3 are clearly going into Room 101) I'd like to nominate premier$hite football. Its just dull as it is no longer competitive.

True, Becks can ping a ball really well, but what is he really doing? he's kicking a ball, something that 99% of people can do. Even if you have never played before you can quite easily kick a ball, while a lot of beginners playing snooker struggle to hit a red with the cue ball.

Likewise, a lot of professional footballers struggle to hit a team-mate with a pass. Did you watch us play last season?

No I didn't. Last game I saw was the pompey pre-season game before I left for uni. Everytime I've been back for a random weekend its either being sold out, we were playing away or in true student fashion I was skint.
