There are loads of restaurants in Southend that you wonder how they manage to stay open because no one ever goes there.

Has anyone been to:

Popular restaurant, Leigh.
Edelweiss restaurant, Leigh.
Tudor thai restaurant, Hadleigh.

Manolys in Leigh is very good for Thai food. Moderately priced but i don't like the way they have two sittings on busy nights.

Irmas in Leigh is very good as well if you like pizzas.

I went there one Valentines for the special set Valentines meal - it was OK, nothing spectacular.

I went back on a normal Saturday night recently and it was better - food, service, everything.

Did you go to the pikey top one or the classy bottom one though? The bottom one even has an upstairs, outrageous! If you really want to charm them go to the drive-through on Eastern Avenue and get all nostalgic about the Invisible Man/Rusty Bucket/Golden Goblet.

I disagree, if you REALLY want to impress her take her to the Kursaal one............that'll clinch the deal.

All those kids in shell suits and Burberry caps, how can she refuse?

I will be eating in the Hoy and Helmet tonight.

Does anyone know if they do a mixed grill or similar gutbuster?

Yes - Swiss
The owner Herbert is the chef and his wife is head waitress.
Food is excellent, and good value considering the amount of food provided.
Taken several customers there, some of whom now make annual trips down to this part of the world just to go there.
Used to be difficult to get into Fri / Sat nights unless you booked about 3 months in advance.

Last went there about 20-25 years ago, when a moussaka and a bottle of Mateus Rose was considered the last word in fine dining...

Matt

P.S. I tend to eat out in London nowadays, where there are one or two decent enough restaurants...

Mateus Rose when you were being posh and Blue Nun when you were just being sophisticated, those were the days!

Don't forget the party sevens when you were with your mates

Probably, though I don't feel the urge to start caring this morning, it's only Scriv after all. I'll see how I feel when my minions return with my Benjy's filth breakfast.

2 hours 50 minutes till the pub, that'll be my fancy restaurant today with a special main course of Strongbow.
