The following is meant as a rough guide of options of trave to Doncaster on th 16th May 2008 in the second leg of the Play Offs.

COACHCoach travel isn't everybody’s cup of tea, but if your local then it may be the cheapest or easiest way of getting to Doncaster. Two excellent services are provided by the "Shrimpers Trust" and "Shrimpers on Line".

Shrimpers Trust times and prices are shown on a separate thread on this board or you can view the SOL website for their details when available.

CAR
If you have space in your car, or need a lift, please post on this thread. Also exiles let us know where your travelling from, you never know you might have fellow shrimpers living round the corner. If you have any advice or tips on the journey, route or times please pass the information on.

TRAINSBeing a Friday night Train is not an option for return day travel, the last train home is 22.03 and remembering it could go to extra time and penalties this really isn’t feasible.

If you fancy going up Friday staying overnight and coming back Saturday the cost is £56.50 return from London.

If you have a lift back you can get a single at £24.50 from London on the 11.10, 12.10, 12.35. 13.10 or 13.35 (but these tickets will be limited and may sell out) but after that prices shoot up to £45.50 again from London.

I don’t really think trains are an option but if you want other times or prices from Southend please let me know.

If any one has any other thoughts or options please pass this information on.

Travelling by car: Everyones previous experiences of travelling by car to Doncaster will be different however if this helps then great. I last went a couple of years ago when we won the league. If I remember correctly it took bang on around the 3 hour mark from Wickford, however I was fortunate not to get stuck in much traffic.

The route I took was simple and quick. The A127, M25, M1, M18 and you exit nice and early at junction 3 of the M18. This is the route my Tom Tom says, although I didnt have it 2 years ago and it says 3 hr 18 and 197 miles, most route planners will tell you to go up the A1. Many fans will take the M11, A14, A1 route but in previous experiences of using that route north I find it slower, as its single and dual carriage way. On the M1 route being 3 and 4 lane motorways with only speed camera's in the road works at Luton you can pretty much do 80-90 mph (yes I know its naughty but most of us do it) most of the way there and make up on time as if you went on the A1.

Also traffic on a Friday. I feel you would be better off on the M1 as the A1 will have more traffic build up due to the amount of local turn offs and roundabouts.

Personally if I can get the day off work all ok then I will be leaving between 2.00 and 2.30, planning to get there around 5.00 to 5.30, head into town for some food and then head to the away pub to soak up some atmosphere and will be returning home that evening for around 1.00 providing the game does not go to extra time

On the road option, the A1 is pretty good most of the way up now, if taking the M11/A14/A1 route. The only slow bit is the A14 on which there are loads of cameras, but it does really depend what sort of time you're leaving. Going around lunch time you shouldn't have any problems.

As I posted at Xmas time when we were up there in the league, it's a fiver to park in the official car parks. I actually found a really good spot in a close by industrial estate a minute or so from the roundabout on the A630 (mainly due to following some old guy with a DRFC mini-kit in the back of his motor). It was a 5-10 minute walk to the away-end and seemed a fairly safe place to park.

if i was driving from Southend I would go up the A1 instead of the M1, but i think there is little between the two... and it's mainly a case of luck on a friday rush-hour. only thing that might be a reason in support of the M11/A14/A1 is that you can still skip the A1 and go along the A14 to the M1 and you haven't really lost any time... if you go the M1 you're stuck on it.

for me, i'll be walking to Sheffield station (10mins), train to Donny (20mins), walk to Keepmoat (30mins)

job done!

It depends what train you go on the 11.10, 12.10,13.10 and 13.35 are all still £24.50 at the moment, but these will get you to Donny very earlier. later trains will set you back £45.50

If you were really keen you could get the 10.10 and 10.35 for £18.50 single but what you would do in doncaster for 7 or eight hours I don't know.

Yes Pubey but celebrating for seven hours before the match is a little premature, don't you think?

Hiya - we're driving up from Rochford and will have a couple of free seats if anyone wants a lift - would split the fuel cost by as many people in the car. Will be leavining sometime about lunchtime for an easy drive up.

If you're interested drop us a message.

Cheers

In a normal drive up the A1 to Donny it will take about 3.5 hours including getting parked.Watch out for roadworks,we lost 15mins the other month sitting in a tail-back so check this out,it was about half-way up there.

If you have time on your hands then park up at the council office car park heading into town off a roundabout, can't miss it.We paid just 3 squids for our stay.

From there it's a 5min walk into town (walk straight through the buildings as the crow flies) which is all pretty simple.Stay out of the small boozers as my friend in Donny advises me that some are a bit naughty and just head for the mainstream ones ie Wetherspoons.

From the Wetherspoons you'll need about 25mins to walk to the ground.A cab would be easier! If you park in the car park and walk it obviously it will take about 20mins.

When walking back to the car last time we noticed plenty of industrial units between the town and the stadium and guessed parking would be easier, quicker and obviously free to park there without restrictions.Especially as all the workers there would have knocked off home by then.

We came home last time taking the M1 as our return route and found it a good half-hour longer than the A1 that day. One more thing, don't forget to drape your scarves across the rear of your car!
