CREWE Away 20th September 2008;
The train times to Crewe are excellent unfortunately the fares aren’t. National Rail Enquires states “New Simpler Fares” I think this should read “New DEARER Fares”.
Crewe is ideal by train, in Bretty Angell’s day the players used to go by Train, the station, the ground, the pubs and the chip shops are all within minutes of each other and you will not find a more convenient away trip by train. Regular trains from Euston get you to Crewe in about two and half hours.
FARES
The cheapest I can find is £56.90 return from London or £64.00 from Southend (with or without a railcard). These are Cheap day tickets though so you’re not tied to one particular train, but in January people were booking tickets for our game in April for about £20ish. These were advance fares which don’t seem to be available for Crewe when we need them now.
TIMES
If the prices aren’t good then times are excellent, the following are some examples:
09.03 London Euston arrives Crewe 11.39
09.17 London Euston arrives Crewe 11.49
10.03 London Euston arrives Crewe 12.38
10.17 London Euston arrives Crewe 12.51
Return
17.22 Crewe arrives London Euston 20.02
17.48 Crewe arrives London Euston 20.49
18.19 Crewe arrives London Euston 21.31
18.42 Crewe arrives London Euston 21.59
Tickets can be bought on line at www.nationalrail.co.uk or by phone or asking at your local station.
If anyone can find any better deals please let us know.
I have been travelling to away games for years and I’ve got to say that the pricing appears to be the steepest for years perhaps better deals will be available for our games in the winter months?

Great work with this forum DoDtS but just like to say one of the many disadvantages of living in Middlesbrough rather than Southend is that the train fares you can get travelling from down there all seem cheaper than I can get travelling from up here. It's hard to get a return to anywhere for under 50 quid. Think it must be something to do with going via London from Southend?

Just a minor detail, there is engineering work between Southend Vic and Hockley on the date of Crewe game, so allow extra 15/20mins for journey, but shouldn't cause too many problems.

Chas
The life of an exile is never simple and never cheap, I lived in the Midlands for many years and I do understand the problems.
I'm posting Train threads about three months before each game as it tends to be "book early for cheaper fares" about two weeks before the match I will start a Road and Coach thread, which also can include lifts wanted/on offer.
You never know their could be fellow shrimpers close at hand where you could perhaps share lifts/costs. All I can suggest is that you keep posting and keep plugging the Middlesbrough connection. The whole point of the forum is for the SZ community to help each other, so you never know.
I don't honestly think that Trains are going to be cheap for any of us this year.

I was just looking at the "Shrimpers On Line" website where they quite correctly point out that on the 20th September there is engineering work between Southend Victoria and Hockley, and a replacement bus service is in operation.
Shouldn't be too much of a problem, but just be aware if you travelling from this area, and either travel on the Fenchurch Street line or allow a little extra time.

Charlie, as you state the cost from Middlebrough to Crewe is £57.30, however National Rail aren't always logical or consistant. If you were to book two journeys Middlesbrough to Manchester and Manchester to Crewe its cheaper i.e.
9.00 Middlesbrough arrive Man. Pic 11.22 £11.00 single
12.03 Man Pic arrive Crewe 12.54
17.30 Crewe arrive Man Pic 18.10 £10.40 return
18.57 Man Pic arrive Middlesbrough 21.25 £13.00 single
TOTAL £34.40 ( the single fares are advance tickets and need to be booked early as the prices will go up)
I've posted this rather than by PM as wherever your journey is, sometimes fares can be cheaper if you break it down into two, prime example often cheaper to but ticket from Southend to London and then London to destination rather than book all the way through to destination.
Hope this helps, but do please check the times and fares yourself before booking/

You know that DoDtS is always on the look out for cheaper fares (if perhaps not the most straight forward of journey) well I can reduce the Train fare from £56.90 to £32.00 if your the adventourous type that dosen't mind a mix of travel:
OUTWARD
National Coach
Leaving London at 07.00 or 08.00 or 09.00
To Birmingham arriving 10.00 or 10.50 or 11.40 SINGLE FARE £5.00 advance ticket.
Train
Leaving Birmingham at 12.21 or 13.21
Arriving Crewe 13.23 or 14.23 SINGLE FARE £6.00 advance ticket.
RETURN
Train
Leaving Crewe at 17.22 or 18.21 or 19.23
arriving Birmingham 18.27 or 19.27 or 20.31 SINGLE FARE £6.00 advance ticket
National Coach
Leaving Birmingham at 19.00 or 20.00 or 21.00
Arriving London at 21.40 or 22.40 or 23.40 SINGLE FARE £5.00 advance ticket
TOTAL £32.00 These Tickets on both Coach and Train are limited on a first come first served basis and you must travel on the stated times for your ticket.
If any mad fools do try this please check out all the details for yourself, and leave plenty of time for connections, remember that coaches can't always run to time as well as trains are supposed to.
Further details of National coaches can be found at www.nationalexpress.com
for the trains see link in the initial post.

Shame, we got to Crewe on the train pretty cheaply last year. Good one to go to given it's proximity to the station!

Thanks Southend-United_FC you just beat me to it.
Sorry did you spot my deliberate mistake £5 + £6 + £6 + £5 = £22 not £32
So I've just knocked another tenner of the price, good work DodtS.

The National Rail website is absolutely rubbish at the moment, the Crewe fares were £56 till a few days ago when they were reduced to £26, then they suddenly shot up to a silly £88
The price is still £26 return.
If you get silly results on National Rail enquiries then try the "Trainline" or something similar failing which phone and get a personal quote.

Fares are moving again I've been trying to book three tickets (for DtS and mates they couldn't book earlier). I couldn't get the £13.00 tickets on the 11.03 and had to settle for £20.50 tickets on the 10.03.
Return the 18.19 has gone up to £20.50 but the 18.42 is still £13.00
Return fare now £33.50

*** CHEAP FARES MAY STILL BE AVAILABLE ***
At the weekend I found the train websites a disaster, I tried three different ones and had problems with all three, when I could actually get into them, they showed fares but wouldn't let you book them, screens froze, eventually I had to pay £33.50.
Now our Friends at The Little Gazette have tipped us off that you can still get £26 returns by booking with certain companies or by splitting the tickets at Wolverhampton full details at:
www.thelittlegazette.com/news/loadsngl.asp?cid=EDW4&id=406279
So if you haven't booked yet those bargains may still be around, get booking

The £13.00 singles up to Crewe do seem to have finally gone so £33.50 is once again the best available.
If you don't want to hang around the Wolverhampton split at five pounds more is a good option as you can get the first train out of Crewe after the match.

Tube warning on Saturday. Euston Square is cut off by closures on the Metropolitan and Circle Line at various stages. No Victoria Line for Euston.
If coming in to Fenchurch Street walk to the Bank and get on the Northern Line (City Branch). For Liverpool Street take the short walk to Moorgate and catch the Northern Line there.
If you don't fancy any exercise there are lazier options by just staying on the Central Line to Tottenham Ct. Rd. or even Tower Hill to the Embankment but if your also adding on 20odd minutes for the bus from Southend Vic to Hockley time is slipping away.
Safe journey however you get there.

Change to the Northern Line (Charing Cross branch) at Embankment and it's non stop to Euston itself.
Even quicker than usual, Warren Street is closed all day so no stopping there!
