Hartlepool away Friday 19th December 2008
The last Friday before Christmas, anyone fancy the long haul to Hartlepool? Why haven't you got any Christmas parties to go to?
I somehow don't think we will be taking many.
Well you won't be suprised that there are NO trains back on the Friday night.
The good news is that you can get trains to Hartlepool from London for £15 advance single.
Times:
13.01 from London change at Darlington and Thornaby (wherever that is)arrive Hartlepool 17.03
or
14.30 from London change at Darlington and Thornaby arrive Hartlepool 18.01
Alternatively trains from London with just one change at Newcastle cost £19 advance single.
So if you can arrange a return lift this trip could be a goer.
If anyone wants more details of the trains or details of hotel or travelodge in hartlepool please let me know.

And the bad news is that these cheap fares at £15 or £19 seem to have gone, and are now at £29.50 advance single from London.
Cheapest return from London coming back Saturday morning is £44.50.
Can't see many (any) going by train

Thornaby's only about 10 or 11 miles east of Darlington, near Middlesboro' so that bit is going to be a very short journey. Both Darlington and Middlesboro' are decent enough places to stop for a few hours, plenty of pubs with good, cheap food.

There are still £47 singleas available, others are at £54.50
DoDtS's fatherly advice: forget this one by train!

National Express are now giving railcard discounts even on their cheap fares, so it may be worth a punt with that in mind. Big problem is Friday the 19th marks the end of the last full week before Christmas (bloody obvious I hear you all say) and the last day of the school term therefore every man and his dog will begin leaving London that weekend to go home or wherever for Xmas. Demand will therefore push up the price........and there was us Shrimpers thinking thousands were going to Hartlepool to support The Blue's.
Probably a bit out of my price range, but does anyone know if the club are chartering a plane again this year? I think the price last season was around the £300 mark. Now there's an idea for a Christmas present.

Thanks for that Basildon Shrimp as you say this is a really busy weekend, travel options are not good.
Singles still at £47 or £54.50

Just out of interest - I've done a bit of flicking through the airlines, and you can fly direct to Teesside Airport with bmi from Heathrow for about £270 return, or you can fly British Airways also from Heathrow for £51 each way to Newcastle. Only problem is, you can't get a return flight that night so return would be Saturday in both cases. I think there's at least an hourly train service from Newcastle to Middlesboro' via Hartlepool.

Train prices very high, but Ian the Girth got a good deal with a young persons railcard.
Match Tickets £20 adults £10 seniors, students and juniors.
Available from the SUFC ticket office.
If too pricey have a look at the Coach or Road thread.

Just thought I'd mention, I was looking into getting back to Manchester from the Hartlepool game and although the last train leaves Hartlepool before the game's due to finish (and that's the last train to anywhere, not just down South!!), there's a National Express coach leaving Hartlepool at 23:40 for London.
It'll set you back £28 to get back to London but it's the best option if you're not driving, you can't go by supporters coach and you can't stomach the overnight stay in Cleveland.
Incidentally, it also stops at York, Doncaster and MK and thankfully for me there are randomly trains through the night from York to Manchester Airport stopping at Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester City Centre so I should get back to Manc at 3.45 just before the night buses stop!!
Hope that info's helpful to at least one other person!!

I know, it's ridiculous. You'd think that this close to Christmas they'd have the decency to at least stage it on a Saturday - IIRC this will be the fourth consecutive away game at Hartlepool played outside of the weekend.
Having said that, I think our home game with Pools is on a Friday as well so it may have been a reciprocal thing.

I believe they changed it first.

I believe they changed it first.
Quite why football clubs can't show some sense in these matters baffles me. If they want to have friday night games, then be fair and arrange for them to be against clubs that are relatively local!
I would have thought it's a Friday precisely beacuse it's so close to Christmas. That way fans can see the game AND do Christmas shopping.
I expect we changed the return game to a Friday as a 'thank you'...
