Yet again I require help with my laptop, sometimes I wonder if its really worth having the thing.

When I turn it on, I give it plenty of time to load up, sometimes i'll leave it for more than an hour.

The wallpaper loads up but the task bar at the bottom of the screen and the desktop items dont come up :(

Any ideas, Anyone ?

I don't know how long you've had it for but some computer geek from my work claims that laptops have a 3 or 4 year life span before they need updating as its difficult to add software etc

New processor, upgrade RAM and maybe buy external harddrive / cooling fans

WTF is that old lump of junk!?! Maybe that's the kind of thing you use Creekson, but it's not what I use. I'm more a Vista fan (though, owing to the fact that I'm using Macs more and more due to college I'm thinking of getting one of those, don't suppose anyone knows a decent Mac that's going for round about 1-1,500 quid?)

Possibly....

1. You have a virus which is slowing your laptop boot up. Try and run a scan if it ever boots up. Maybe restore the original config and start again.

2. Very often you can turn a slow laptop to something reasonable by adding some memory. I have done this twice for laptops perhaps "past their best" and has worked a treat for only about £20-£30 which is far better than buying a new lappy.

Certainly when I have dealt with a slow laptop, it has been one or other of the above.

Corrupted Operating System. What are you running? Try booting in Safe Mode (press F5 as the computer is booting) and see if that gets you further. If not, make sure that the First Boot Device is set to DVD and reboot with your O/S disc in the drive and choose "Repair".

Don't know if you have solved it, Ayrshire, but

Here is a guide to repairing an XP operating system (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm)

Hope it helps.
