Just a quick question for the computer experts of the Zone.

My girlfriend wants a laptop, a basic one really, and has found a Toshiba one for £329 and the cheapest Dell is £349. The spec is basically the same with the exception that thet Toshiba hard drive is 40gig bigger. The only other difference though is the processor. The one in the Toshiba is a Intel Celeron Dual-Core Processor T1600, whilst the one in the Dell is the Intel Celeron Processor 560 2.13 GHz, so not a Dual-Core one.

So my question is, which one is worth going for? Is my original assumption that the Dual-Core one is better, correct? Or am I wrong on that?

Overall they're probably quite similar, the Intel Celeron Processor 560 2.13 GHz has a faster clock speed meaning individual task are performed more quickly, where as the Intel Celeron Dual-Core Processor T1600 handles mutiple tasks at the same time. So its really going to depend on what she plans to do on her laptop, and if she'd rather have 40gb extra for £20 less.

I'd go for the Toshiba (just got one myself and very pleased so far) and use the extra £20 towards upgrading the memory. I would wager that an extra Gb, or even 512k, of memory would have a much bigger effect on the speed of the thing than the processor difference.

Also, the build quality of budget Dells is not the greatest.

agree completely. especially with vista, it's worth doubling your RAM!
