View Full Version : Naming the Stadium

(I've already posted this on another forum but I feel it warrants its own thread!)

I feel the new stadium should be called the "Broomfield Stadium" in honour of Sidney Broomfield, the man who was instrumental in the construction of Roots Hall; this man laid every single concrete step of the old South Bank (which once held over 13,000 spectators) by hand over a FIVE year period - there were 72 steps!

"Some days", Sid recalled, "we would arrive at the ground to discover that heavy overnight rain had swept mud from the top of the banking over the steps we had completed ... it was a real slog".

The man is a legend. He had his own testimonial a few years back. So I'm all for a campaign to name the new stadium is his honour ...

Agreed Mike, certainly be a good way of bring a real piece of RH to a new stadium.

Id like to see the main stand named after Frank Walton.

The Broomfield Stadium sounds like a great idea and would be in keeping with the traditions of the club.

I mentioned in another thread, naming the main stand, the Fredy Eastwood stand... but I was only "joshing"! what I really meant was the "Go ahead, make my day"! stand. http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Why? Kursal wasn't the club's first ground... it was Roots Hall.

I back the call for the 'Broomfield Stadium'... but I doubt it would happen.

Well first off we all know the club will be looking for a sponsorship deal, i can't imagine the stadium's new name would be sold for a £1.000.000 over a certain period.

But the broomfield stadium is a great idea, This is something the club should get behind as well if money is not the object (doubt that though) Pehaps martin dawn would stump up the cash and call the ground.

What our the fans feelings about a company buying the name, very much like Arsenal?

In one aspect, I can see it as selling out but can beggers really be chosers? On this one, it depends a lot on who the company would be, for example, lets say Nike wanted to do it, it could be called The Nike Arena or something along those lines but on the other hand it could be a company like Pound Stretcher.

On the flip side of the coin, how about after one of our all time greats? Maybe a vote on the official site with a list of 7 or 8 names after reading supporters opinions. The top fella would have the stadium named after him, and the four runners up could have stands named after them?

The Reebok stadium was an original approach and kind of had a nice ring to it. The Fitness First stadium? Oh dear.

It would be good having the backing but it does seem to be devaluing the name of the club by selling out like this. Problem at our level is that we probably need the backing to the point where we have no choice.

I'd sell the stadium name to the highest bidder, on a season to season basis, to raise capital for the club.

I'd then name the stands and parts of the ground after SUFC legends.

The Leon Consantine East Stand.

The Mark Rawle Changing rooms etc etc.

Broomfield Stadium is probably the best one mentioned so far, other good ones, New Roots Hall or Fossetts Stadium?
I hope we don't get a sponsored ground, i know it brings in money but it sells out the traditions of a club, i mean arsenal and the 'Emirates Stadium'? that sickens me.

Stanley Collymore Stadium!

That pays back the loss of the stand name to him, and think of it, all over th Beeb and what not:

Ray Stubbs: "and now we go to the Stanley Collymore Stadium where Southend are playing Yeovil, Garth Crooks reports..."

My only concern about "The Broomfield Stadium" is that it sounds rather like Blackpool's ground, "Bloomfield Road".

A rather simple solution would be, perhaps, to name it after a road nearby:

Fossett's Way
Sutton Road

However, for something a bit different, I'm quite keen on: The New Kursaal.

http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
The Kursaal is not that far away, and I just happen to like it - that's all! It's something a bit different, a bit individualistic. It's one of the things I love about the name "Roots Hall" - there's absolutely no confusing it with anywhere else in the country. The same could not, alas, be said for "Broomfield Stadium" - which sounds an awful lot like Bloomfield Road... which in turn sounded a bit like Boothferry Park, Blundell Park, Brunton Park...

Nothing sounds like Roots Hall; and nothing would sound like The New Kursaal. Our new stadium would be a new start, and so it deserves a really fresh, different name to celebrate that.

One final thought, however: if we could persuade eccentric, billionaire balloonist Steve Fossett to bung us a few quid, I'm sure I'd have absolutely no problem calling it The Fossett Stadium.

Do you think Uncle Ron should drop him a line and ask him...?!

http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Dear Steve,

You may not know, but here in Southend - a town in the UK with a fine aeronautcial tradition as shown at our annual air-show - we're enormously inspired by your feats of hot air ballooning.

We are building a new stadium, and are trying to work out whether there are any figures or corporations who might like to contribute generously to its construction, in return for having the stadium named in their honour.

If you were to give us just $8 million, we should be delighted to name our 20,000 all-seater stadium the Fossett Stadium in your honour.

Whaddya reckon?

Love,

Uncle Ron
