Just thinking bout the Div 1 days - hell, I'd sell my soul to be in Div 2... but anyway, how about a team of players you liked for some reason, but everyone else you knew hated...

Mark Hone

Not much of a team, but its a start!

I was always a massive fan of the Lion from Lagos - his pre-season goal against Arsenal was a cracker.

I make the line up so far then:-

GK
RB - Hone
CB - McNally (did anyone really not like him?! Thought he was class)
CB - Dublin
LB

RM - Julian Hails
CM - Andy Sussex
CM
LM

FW - Jeroen Boere
FW - Domonic I-awful

I've added Hails & Sussex from my own list. The stick Sussex used to get (whilst probably deserved! http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ) was a bit harsh. I remember him pinging a 40 yd cross field ball to feet once and me and my mate stood up and clapped and said adoringly "Andy Sussex" - only to look round and see everyone looking at us http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

We still give players an "Andy Sussex" today for outstanding contributions...

Come on, complete the team...

The **** was sh*tty when he was here too. *If one balanced, in the one hand, his talent and his wages with, in the other hand, his lack of effort and mediocre return of goals (14, I think, when in Div 2), it is hard to think of a player who has ever given less and been a bigger waste of money in the history of this football club.

He was a Premier / Div 1 player in terms of ability, on (at least) £3,500 a week, and yet he only got 14 goals in Divison 2. *He totally sums up the club's malaise at that time, is totally symptomatic of why we're in the total and utter sh*te we're in at the moment.

And whilst his attitude at the club was dreadful, his attitude afterwards was a total and utter disgrace. *Calling us "sad w***ers" after we'd sent our heartfelt comiserations to him - well, the man is scum, he's a ****.

That said the player who was poor in Div 1 could do it for us at the minute.

Andy Thomson and gary Jones were disliked as well, Although I rated Thomson...

The side is slightly confusing... this is a "most people liked but I, oddly, hated" team, isn't it?

I mean, it's not a rubbish XI... we can usually agree on that! (e.g. Connelly on the right, Livett on the left etc.)

Surely Dangerous Dave Morley should be in the side instead of McNally? *Some liked (even adored in the case of Mrs. Milkey) him, most thought he was a bit of a nightmare.

Andy Harris - I never thought he was as bad as everybody made out.
Also Dave Morley. I brought a mate to a home game, he asked me who I thought was any good, I said Morley's not bad. He then proceeded to be at fault for all three goals that we conceded (can't remember the score or the oppo). Needless to say my mate has never let me forget it.

You obviously didn't see the Wycombe game at Adams park 1997(ish), when he was absolutely terrible, we lost 4-1 and he scored a couple of OG's IIRC.....

Never forgave him for one of the worst performances I've ever seen in a Southend shirt.

Always a fan of Gary Bennett.

Not the most gifted footballer but always gave 100% and mores the point could take a bloody penalty !

Could anyone forget the goals against Spurs(Lineker, Gazza and co ) at the Hall ??

Paul Roberts. Total cr*p. Best thing he ever did was to leave. Twice!!

didn't he leave after helping us gain promotion from the old 4th division in 1987 and if this current bunch showed 50% of the commitment he showed we wouldn't be in the mess we are now.

But...made possibly one of the best debuts for an SUFC player - he was amazing at Plymouth, scored and sealed our first away win for what seemed about fifty years. Made the Sky 'Team of the week'

I remember the following Tuesdat we played at Wrexham - he started brilliantly again but when Wrexham noticed he was a danger they kept kicking him and that was that I'm afraid!

Rumour also has it that 'Pepe' once cried in the dressing room at Craven Cottage because it was 'too cold' for him!
