...for burning a youth team keeper's eye with a cigar. Ouch.

Why is it that football players think that they are above the law? Six-weeks' wages my arse - the CPS should have the thug up for GBH and bang him up for 18 months - that should sort out his life priorities pretty feckin' sharpish.

And they wonder why we are descending into a society with lawless kids... is it any wonder, if ****s like Barton are their role-models, paid almost £20K a week and yet allowed to behave like a total feckin' hooligan?

I do believe I'm becoming middle-aged... but I also believe that this guy should be up on charges. It's bang out of order.

Right, I've now had a rant on the 606 message board, and I now feel a lot better...

Why is it that football players think that they are above the law? Lee Hughes did, until eventually they caught up with him.
Six weeks' wages fine? What sort of punishment is that - for a young man on the best part of £1m a year?
When I went through a speed camera at 4 in the morning on an empty road, I was pretty damn apologetic about it - but it didn't stop the law putting 3 points on my licence.
Barton has committed an act which (at first blush) may well constitute a s. 20 (if not a s.18) GBH.
Moreover, Barton is a role model, and should therefore be setting a BETTER example than most ordinary people.
However, leaving that aside for the moment, any normal member of the public would be charged by the police and CPS and would pay for his crime. Why do the same rules not apply to Barton? Because he is sorry?! Nonsense.
Barton's remorse may go to the mitigation of his punishment, but my goodness - he MUST face the consequences of his action. Remorse after the act simply isn't an excuse.
If he doesn't face police / CPS sanctions as a result of his crime - and it is a crime unless it's proved to be a complete accident (in which case, why is he being fined?) - then what message does that send to our kids?
The message it would send, in my view, is that there's one law for the rich and famous, and one law for the rest of us.
And that, plainly & simply, is WRONG.
High time that this young man - and a fair few other of his peer group within football - were taught a salutary lesson. They have God-given abilities, and are paid riches beyond the rest of our wildest dreams - funded by us mug punters.
It's high time they paid a little of that back to society - and they can start that repayment process by acting a heck of a lot more responsibly than they do now, and by setting a good example to our children.
And if they break the law, then they must jolly well face the consequences. If City have any responsibility, they'll fine him, carry out an investigation, and then hand the file to the CPS.
I shan't be holding my breath waiting for that to happen, however.
Yours - a very angry & disappointed,
Matt

I agree that this is bang out or order. The story goes that the youth team player tried to set alight to his t-shirt, so understandably he went a little mad, I'm not agreeing with what he did but you too would be ****ed off if someone tried to burn your shirt.
Why, though, is he being a c**t? He is a decent footballer and has been touted as a future England international, but unfortunately for him the two best players in the Premier$hite and Gerrard and Lampard. Whom are both central midfielders like Barton.

If I saw someone poking a cigar into someone else's eye, I'd think he was a c**t. Wouldn't you?

I think he meant "Why is Barton acting like a c**t?"
Anyway the story that I know is that Barton found it funny to go around the party catching his team-mates out by stubbing his cigar onto the back of their arms. The youth team player then thought he'd get Barton back and put a lighter near his back, Barton flipped and stubbed his cigar out in the youth's eyes.
Classy guy.

Just heard Gordon Taylor from the PFA on the radio about this, I've never liked that c**t but then I heard him say today that this is just one of the Xmas party things and it's what this time of year is all about?
Erm hang on a mo. I've long admired the way he wll always back his members even when it's obvious they are wrong but surely this is a step too far?

Agreed. Why aren't the CPS involved?

Can they get involved if the youth team member doesn't want to press chargers?
