IM and chat problems

Folks,

I have never been able to use any IM or chat programs (such as the FB one) with any success and I'm thinking it's something to do with my router firewall?
Has anyone got any ideas how I can fix it as now Mrs MK has moved in she feels lost without the ability to talk to the people she's just spent all day with :zzzzz: ....
