Never mind the bobble hats, fans of Preston North End are adopting the city gent look for the rest of the season. The high-flying Championship side are encouraging supporters to turn up to matches wearing bowler hats. Back in the 70s, the headwear famously worn by Steed in The Avengers and John Cleese in Monty Python, was all the rage at Deepdale. According to legend, former Preston boss Alan Ball (Snr) dubbed the North End fans "gentry" after a game with Halifax. The faithful were quite taken with the idea and starting taking bowlers and umbrellas to away games. It proved to be a passing fad but, just like flares and Donny Osmond, the hats are coming back. The Preston official website is encouraging fans to adopt the look this Saturday, when they travel down to London to watch their team face QPR. And you can bet they will be hoping for a spin on that famous old adage - get a hat, get ahead.

Maybe Southend could do a similar thing with Burberry caps?

'Chav' baseball caps or 'Kiss me quick' hats might be more appropriate.
