Fair enough. It's quite sad, whilst I was spoilt for choice for a second striker, a centre mid and a centre back, we have had some rubbish keepers. Alas, I was just too late for Merv the Swerve.

Agreed, I think if i were picking a best XI post-Royce, I'd risk not playing a goalkeeper and put on another forward!
I found the team picked itself other than right back - I only saw Austin once or twice so was reluctant to include him, but then though, other than Julian Hails, what option was there?

Sansome was the best keeper I ever saw at Roots Hall. Used to pull off some stunning saves week after week......
Never seen anyone since then that was worth singing "England's number 1" to and we used to sing that to Sammy every week. Royce was Broughton-esque by comparison for me.

Blimey. I agree with Napster that is controversial
I can't believe good journeyman players like Cornwall and Sussex have been included on the bench ahead of Ronnie Whelan, Keith Jones and Mike Marsh.
Collymore on the bench is arguable as he only played 33 games, but to then pick Thommo or Mooney ahead of him is controversial to say the least. I liked both players, but even so IMHO they're way behind Collymore, Crown, Cadette, Angell and Benjamin.

Mark Gower reminds me a lot of Scott Houghton.
Both capable of beating their man countless times and scoring regularly from distance. However both seem to turn it on and off and their defensive games can leave a lot to be desired. If they were more aware of their team-mates and worked harder I can't help thinking both would be plying their trade at a higher level.

Good call on lee Hodges, mate. Had completely forgotten him.
See ya Scotty Houghton!

Yet another spurs player making his way to the Hall:

OK, not that many. *Time was when they used to travel in the other direction (Austin, Edinburgh)...

Gower, Kightly, Kelly, Thurgood...
We also had Guy Butters on loan from Spurs
(I always thought he was a quality player for us)

Quote[/b] (Smudger @ Feb. 02 2004,10:49)]Sansome was the best keeper I ever saw at Roots Hall. Used to pull off some stunning saves week after week......
Never seen anyone since then that was worth singing "England's number 1" to and we used to sing that to Sammy every week. Royce was Broughton-esque by comparison for me.
There's been huge debates on my disliking of Roycey
My reason's are simple.
Despite never doubting the guys ability - he could be a good keeper and was deservedly player of the year in 95/96 - he seemed to give up too easily.
In the two relegation seasons he disn't play well, whether it was confidence or not I don't know but in my opinion he just wasn't up for the fight, and anyone at the Wrexham game on the last day of 97/98 couldn't possibly argue when Royce let in three very very soft goals.
His kicking was also poor - but did improve.

P.S. If you saw Otto play, surely you saw Sammy play?! The fact that you've got Roycey ahead of him is controversial enough, but Capleton as well...?!!

This is almost impossible because every time I think about someone to put in I realise I've missed someone even better.
So I am going for something different - The Legend XI
I am struggling for a right back - Dean Austin is ruled out for starters I couldn't stand him either as a player for us or for Spurs. One puff and he fell over injured (kinda reminds me of Napster http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ). When you see the team I've picked a few suggestions for right back should come to mind.
33 games makes Stan a great player but NOT a legend before anyone asks.
Sammy
Clark Moody Powell
Poutney Butler Martin Tilson
Angell Roy Roy Super Roy
Others I have known and loved -
Goalkeepers - Freeman, Cawston,
Defenders - Prior, Townsend, Scully, Stead, Jones
Midfielders - Marsh, Tinkler, Maher, Morris, Ling
Forwards - Cadette, Crown, D Parker, Stanley, Benjy,
I've done a massive injustice to some of the players that I should be able to remember in the 70s and 80s but its getting late. Someone like Stid should be able to help out here.
Of the current crop Maher is already in the nearly list. Our longest serving player and very close to becoming player of the season for the second time. (I look forward to McScriven presenting the award http://www.shrimperzone.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ).
Others that have the potential are Warren, Smith, Gower, Bramble and Broughton. I see nothing in the rest of them that sets them aside from other players I've seen in the third division.
Broughton was a bitter pill for me to swallow but I'm happy to stick my hand up and say I could be wrong. Bramble is one of those enfuriating players that doesn't seem to realise exactly how much talent he actually has. If he is not careful I think he's likely to drift out of the professional game, but I'd love that not to be the case.
