With my dwarf XI seemingly picked (any more candidates please add to the other thread) what we need is a charity match (in aid of SUSCT?).

The obvious opponents would be a giants' XI consisting of players who became professional footballers not because they were better than their peer group, but because they were bigger (preferably just lanky).

To set the scene my first organised match was when I was about 7. As all previous footballing experience had been chasing the ball in a large group I was without a defined position. The adult organising us had no problems. "You're big, you should be able to kick people and kick the ball a long way. Go and play in defence". Obviously my Maher-esque passing skills were completely over-looked and I never made it as a pro-footballer. But how about a Southend Utd XI of players who made it this way.....

Candidates to start us off with:

R. Robinson
A. Edwards T. Jordan P. Whelan ?
? ? M. Bentley L. Johnson
D. Broughton J. Lee

Once these dwarfs v giants line-ups are finalised I'd pay good money to see these sides clash.

Connelly was 6ft tall, so he's straight in the side. I'll work on the others...

Roger "Harry" Willis for Centre midfield? *He was 6ft tall.

Left back... could Keith Dublin play there? *Another 6ft tall player. That would give us:

Robinson

Edwards Jordan Whelan Dublin

Connelly Willis Risbridger Johnson

Regis Lee

Can't help thinking that Bentley's inclusion is very harsh, so I've popped young Gareth there, merely for being a psycho who managed to pick up a card within 5 minutes of his professional debut; and I'm always reluctant to pick current players (e.g. Drewe), hence my substitution of him for Dave Regis...

Risbridger - good call!

Whilst Dublin certainly wasn't good enough he isn't nearly tall enough. He was however close to getting into my dwarf XI as a centre-half who wasn't tall enough.
Bentley was picked purely because he looks lanky and is a midfielder a rare combination. Doh! Dave Martin! Of course.
Drewe's an automatic. Its not even worth arguing about. Its a past and present team.

Edwards Jordan Whelan L. Johnson
Connelly Risbridger Martin Willis
Broughton Lee

Who was the 6'7" goalkeeper - Spittle?

Maybe Mark Hone in for Andy Edwards?

Edwards was only cack as he was really a centre-half played out of position.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree about Drewe... I think it's a bit of a "slagging off" to a current player, which I'm not prepared to do whilst he's still at the club. *After he's left, however...

As for Dublin, are you saying he's another on the "porkie pie" front?! *According to soccerbase he's 6 feet tall...

I thought Dave Martin was a centre half, not a centre midfielder...? *Right back - step forward Gary Poole, the biggest waste of space ever. *At 6ft tall, he qualifies.

I think you're right about Spittle, so he goes in for Wyan (since he's also current staff... oops!). Line-up now looks like:

* * * * * * * * * *Spittle

Poole * * Jordan * * Whelan *Dublin

Connelly Risbridger * Willis * L. Johnson

* * * * * * *Regis * * * Lee

Not one of them under 6ft; vs. the shorties - not one of whom is over 5'9", I think. Marvellous.

He was used in both positions, but more regularly as centre mid.

Ah... indeed; thinking about it, was it Johnny Cornwell who played more often at centre-half and Dave Martin at centre-mid?

In my mind's eye, the 1989/90, 1990/91 and 1991/92 teams lined up something like this:

* * * * * * Sansome

Austin *Prior * Cornwell * Edinburgh

Ling * * Martin *Butler * * Locke

* * * * *Benjamin *Crown

* * * * * * *Sansome

Austin * Prior * Cornwell *Powell

Ansah * Martin *Butler * Locke/Tilson

* * * * *Benjamin *Angell

* * * * * ** Sansome

Austin * Prior * Scully *Powell

Ansah * Jones *Butler * Tilson

* * * * *Benjamin *Angell

Does my memory serve me correctly...? *Ah, what a line-up. *Feeling all wistful again...

1989/90

Sammy
Dixon* Clark Prior Roberts

Dixon replaced by Austin in about Feb. Roberts also played RB when Edinbrugh in the team
McDonough replaced by Benjamin in about Feb
Ansah signed around then as well and played both RW and up front.

Sammy
Austin Clark Prior* Powell
Ansah Martin Butler Tilson
Benjamin Angell

* Scully replaced Prior half way through
Locke was a regular on the bench

Sammy
Austin Prior Scully Powell
Ansah * Tilson
Angell Benjamin

* IIRC Butler and Martin were injured for much of this season. Sussex and Cornwall and K Jones (after he became our record signing half-way thro) all competed for places in central midfield.
