In Britain's best town to retire to!
Everyone knows that having one of these players can benefit any team and since the departure of you know who, there have been numerous calls for us to get one in. Never an easy task.

It got me thinking how many times an SUFC player has achieved this feat, so using Robin Michels excellent SUFC Database i trawled through season by season noting the top goalscorers. I've taken the period from 1920, as that was our first year in Div 3 South, to last season.

So it's happened 42 times out of 80 seasons but only 3 times since 1992! And only 10 Southend strikers have netted 20+ a season more than once.

I've done this post purely for informative (statto) reasons.

Its actually impressive how many we have had.

Id like to see the stats of how many players managed 20+ over the last decade in all the leagues if anyone is really bored and wants to find out!

Good stuff. I notice everytime we've got promotion we have a striker who has scored 20+ goals and strangely a couple of relegation seasons as well.

In League One, the top two teams go up automatically, with a 20 goal a season striker we've finished in the top two FIVE times.
In League One, the teams from 3rd to 6th get in the play-offs, with a 20 goal a season striker we've finished 3rd-6th NINE times.
In League One, the bottom 4 teams get relegated, with a 20 goal a season striker we've still finished in the bottom 4 SIX times.

Not surprised to see we didn't get a 20-goal man in the barren period. I shudder when I remember who we had playing for us in the dark L2 days.

I had to look at that 88/89 season!

Crownie netted 29 times and we end up getting relegated with 54 points.

So much for needing a 20 goal a season striker... and the 50 point safety mark for that matter.

Just shows that what we need to do is stop shipping 75+ goals a season.

How many did our second top scorer get though?

If one got 20 and the other only 10 it would be the same as two strikers getting 15.

And has been said, we would need to score less if we didnt concede so many.

We could win nearly half our seasons games by scoring 20 goals, if we didnt concede any. :p

And if we were to continue leaking so many goals, then we would need a 30 goal a season striker.

Its all relative

Looking at the list of players I remember...

1985-86 Richard Cadette 25 - 9th
1986-87 Richard Cadette 31 - 3rd PROMOTED

Bought as a complete unknown from Orient (put 4 past them on his debut :D) Quick as lightning - went to Sheff Utd and eventually on to Scotland but never scored anything like as regularly as he did for us.

1988-89 David Crown 29 - 21st RELEGATED
1989-90 David Crown 23 - 3rd PROMOTED

Bought from Cambridge, started his career really late on and for the first dozen games or so couldn't buy a goal. The 35-yard screamer he scored against Wigan one year (still the best goal I've ever seen a southend player score) was only matched by his unbelieveable miss against Spurs (with Linekar, Gazza and Mabbutt playing for them) in the league cup which had he scored would have knocked them out.

1990-91 Brett Angell 26 - 2nd PROMOTED
1991-92 Brett Angell 23 - 12th

Signed from Stockport for 100k. Scored quite a few goals for them the season before we bought him but when he first played for us looked even worse than Drewe! Ran like a deranged chicken, never looked like he was in full control of his legs but had the priceless knack of being in the right place at the right time.

2003-04 Leon Constantine 25 - 17th. Lazy, lazy, lazy...although considering he played on the wing quite a lot that season makes his scoring record all the more remarkable.

2004-05 Freddy Eastwood 24 - 4th PROMOTED (PLAYOFFS)
2005-06 Freddy Eastwood 25 - 1st PROMOTED - Ah, he was rubbish really ;)

So we have had quite a few legends then really, so basically once every 2 years we have a 20 goal a season man. Good work there findin them stats.

This season though I dont see our 6 to 7 or whatever it is strikers getting 20 between them :(

Its a bit unfair claiming Cadette was a compete unkown. He was well known by us. But that dodgy dealing Silkman was about to join you and convinced Cadette to join Southend knowing he'd be a success.

Well someone name a striker who is likly to come to us and score 20+ a seaon??

I personally cant name any!
