Just finished Suffolk Shrimper's Roots to the 92 in four days, really enjoyed it partly because it puts our current woes into perspective. As long as there's always a Southend United, whatever level we happen to be at, we'll all have somewhere to go on a Saturday with friends and family and enjoy the camaraderie that the game brings.

Andy's quest spans five decades and the tales within it of friends/acquainances made in pubs and terraces all over the country make you realise how lucky we are to support a club like ours. Even if we are crap at the moment.

Cheers Jai and good to say hello the other day. even tho we may be crap at the moment one thing is certain - we will be good again one day (albeit that there may be a few more crap moments first)

American Sniper by Chris Kyle.

Enjoyed it overall.

Puzzling why they made a movie out of it and then changed so much, surely his story was interesting enough without having to fabricate the whole sniper vs sniper story. If you are going to make a true story then make it, if you want fiction make that.

I'm reading Player Of Games, the second Culture book.

it's so good people keep stopping me to tell me how it's their favourite book ever and that.

Crikey read those yonks ago. Remember nothing about them now though, always preferred his non science fiction stuff.

Not read it. If you liked it try Sniper One, the British version. The political side of things are very interesting, rules of engagement etc.

Still on a cycling tip

Me too. Finding it easier reading than 'The Power of the Dog' though which I loved but it took me bloody ages. Will Art get Adan Barrera? I haven't found out yet.

At the moment, 200 pages in, Art hasnt even met him again! Yeah, better written than Power of the Dog but still complex - like Game of Thrones in the Mexican drug world.

About 50 pages in to Lionel Shriver's excellent The Mandibles.A dystopian view of what the USA might be like after 2029 if the rest of the world called in the US's national debt and the dollar ceased to be a reserve currency.

Just finished reading Irive Welsh's The Blade Artist.Beware Francis Begbie is back.

It's a very good read, though obviously extremely violent in parts.

Should transfer well to the big screen,as there's no drug taking this time around.

When has that ever stopped a film being made? They're making Porno into a film, and that's got drugs and hardcore sex references. Not one to take your nan.

I reminds me: I once sold a VHS copy of Trainspotting to a little old lady for a £1 at a boot sale, who said that her husband loved trains & was an avid spotter. I should have intervened, but the devil in me just popped out. :hilarious:

Yeah, I knew they were finally filming Porno. My guess is that The Blade Artist will make it to the screen much quicker, since it "only" features extreme violence and not excessive drug taking or porn. That will depend if Robert Carlyle and (presumably) Danny Boyle are signed up though.

Nice story.:hilarious:

Just finished this. Really enjoyable read about the origins of our great game.

Holiday next week so it could finally be time to get stuck in to the massive WWII volume by Max Hastings that has been sitting on the shelf for a couple of years.
