With wins in competitive matches between Southend and Northampton tied at 43 apiece, we head to Sixfields for a fixture which has produced 21 goals in the last four outings (and we got 12 of them !!).
The referee will be an official we have not seen for some while, in fact not since he called the match of at Accrington in 2010/11. He is Carl Boyeson from Hull, an experienced official in his 12th season and will be officiating his 9th Southend match.
So far we have won 3, lost 4 and drawn the other so a win would balance that out nicely. His last two Southend matches both finished up 3-0. Most recently the 3-0 victory in 2009/10 against a woeful Walsall side. No complaints with an early dismissal and two yellows, all to the visitors. Before that was the 3-0 defeat in the early kick-off match at Leicester in 2008/9, where he didn't caution anyone and before that a late 4-3 defeat at Hartlepool the previous season (two yellows each). Earlier matches included another win over Walsall, another defeat at Leicester but nothing especially noteworthy.
I've always thought him to be no better and no worse than average, but he is still getting decent appointments. Not the nimblest of officials, he doesn't get around the pitch as well as some.
This season's card count is a slightly above average 72 yellows from 22 games but just a couple of reds.
