The sacked manager thread

Typical Liverpool. Appoint a man, let him instil a philosophy and chuck money at the squad to help him establish it. Injuries to key players and a failure to replace others that have been sold take their toll, and then they sack him just as those key players begin to return, and after a summer in which they've spent £80m+ backing him. Now they'll hand the reins to Klopp, a manager with a very particular set of ideals and one who commands complete obedience from his players, to come in, rip everything up and start again. It's a complete nonsense. They've effectively written this season off and it's only October.

I'm no fan of Rodgers. He's an egotist, delusional and his day-to-day management has always been questionable. But he deserved more than this.

Still, it's hilarious because it's Liverpool and they deserve everything they get. Another three years scrapping at the heels of actual, bonafide Champions League clubs awaits.

They should get rid of the "transfer committee" as well.

They should get rid of the "transfer committee" as well.

Not sure if I've repeated this on here or not, but...

Last summer Liverpool had Sadio Mane looked at. He'd been identified by a scout, Liverpool had him watched for a while and Rodgers liked what he saw. At the time he was available for roughly £8 million which was nothing in comparison to what Liverpool have dumped on players elsewhere. After deliberation, Rodgers put it to Liverpool's transfer committee that Mane was to be a high priority.

Off the committee tottled and put Mane's stats into their computer. It returned an unfavourable verdict because Mane had scored almost all of his goals against lesser opposition, which produced a lower score using Liverpool's algorithms. The transfer committee's response was that Mane wasn't worth £8m, and Rodgers was told to look elsewhere even if it meant spending more money, as it was value they were looking to identify, not expenditure.

In the end, Salzburg got circa £12m for Mane from Southampton, and Liverpool paid £18m for Balotelli.

Transfer committees can, in general, be a positive influence. Lyon's model for instance has been fantastic. But you just can't let computer programmes run the rule over transfers. There's a great anecdote in Calvin's Nowhere Men about Brentford's Matt Benham meeting with Liverpool's then DoF Damien Commoli to share ideas, only to walk away from the meeting concluding that Commoli was a complete idiot for refusing to believe anything other than his own model was correct.

Another one bites the dust..... Swindon Town have sacked Mark Cooper after a winless run of 8 games. Their chairman will take over temporary charge, details to be released on Monday.
