Lol, Graham Longley states "Festival leisure has one and there are plans for a new one in Basildon Town centre..They work well together"

Nice to see he has taken up star gazing, how on earth does he know they work well together when one hasn't even been built yet? :stunned:

One thing's for sure...this is going to roll on for many months, and more likely years...

to be fair the fossets site could be an absolute goldmine!! just outside the town centre cinema instantly attracts restaraunts and sports bars just another festival leisure! perfect for southend more jobs created no need to go right into southend for food and cinema more revenue for the community and most importantly a new stadium

8 years down the line Cineworld announce "We are no longer going to be opening big out of town multi-complexes but instead are concentrating on smaller venues"

:winking:

Anyone else that doesn't really gove a **** when it comes to the stadium anymore?

Just bores me now tbh...

I think I lost interest in any news regarding the stadium after Ron set the 3rd date for diggers to be on site. God knows how many diggers on site dates have been set since then. I'm not getting my hopes up or excited by anything until there is a picture of Ron Martin, (insert managers name here), (insert club captains name here) with shovels on the site in front of a load of diggers.

As a now outsider it all makes Southend sound really provincial. I must have something like a dozen cinemas within 4 miles of me (and even as someone who rarely goes to the cinema I've been to at least 5 of them), more if I head into Leicester Square.

I think they closed because most only had one or maybe 2 screens showing films with huge seating areas so there was not that much choice for filmgoers. The likes of the Odeon etc have multiple screens and much smaller seating areas to cater for all so get a much larger footfall. I can't see how 3 similar venues would work in this town..A bit like when RM wanted the casino but was huffed by Park Inn over the allowance allowed in the town and what would actually be viable for all to survive.

The Council already have Cineworld in their sites for the seaway car park and I thought, or maybe I imagined it there was already a deal in place for that area. They will be looking into it in great detail to make sure that Cineworld are indeed going to support both areas of the town.

They will still have some doubts tough A: That by joining RM in Ronworld it would scupper their own plans and B: Can the town sustain 3 multi-complex's anyway. Depending on the answers to above they may well think twice about his proposals and amendments.

Finally if they have no written agreement with Cineworld in place and they allow RM first shot at it ..where would that leave them if the company suddenly turn around and advise the council their deal is now off as they were happy for RM to have it.

Edit: Basildon which has a much larger catchment area than us,seems to only have one multi-screen complex these days?

Does Basildon have a much larger catchment area?

I thought Southend was bigger, and then you can add the surrounding areas like Rochford and Castle Point.

Population of London about 8mill odd ..Southend 166.000 so no contest on amount of cinemas and that is without taking London tourism into account. London is where people go for that Special night out..I doubt Southend is quite the same.

Southend =Dead end street. Basildon=All surrounding areas. So I would say yes they have a much bigger catchment area than us.

Exactly this. It's like being told by a partner that they'll change their ways after some misdemeanors. You hope it will happen but you keep getting let down and you eventually give up. I'm at that stage.

The thing about the cinema at Bas Vegas is there is so much choice around it for food of all levels, and nice choice too. Although there are a few nice places around the Odeon, it doesn't really compare. I actually think this could be a really good idea.

Festival leisure park is a hell of a lot better than Odeon in Southend, you don't have to pay to park and its a better cinema and as stated you have great selection of eateries.

Exactly that too!

Pay to park or public transport to the Odeon....oooooh, excitement...not!

As apparently Southend Council have already planned for the Seaway car-park....I am sure there were some big named food places signed up to the plan (11 apparently see link)....I just see this as a conflict now..I have nothing against RM's ideas, I like to go to Baz-Vegas myself. I am just not so sure that the Council will support RM's new plans cinema wise which would **** on their own chips..

Madder things have happened though with Our council..... Vic Circus anybody?

PS: As if Southend council would let anybody park for free. ha ha.

kind of, but now I'm actually getting quite excited by the prospect of cinema, resturants etc being there like a mini Bas Vegas... Never mind a flippin' stadium!

Thinking about it more, there is no-way this town can support 3 complexes. What say 25 odd screens? The Empire in Bas has 18 and does well as it is the only one there. This is a **** or bust moment for the council. I just can't see how they can support their own scheme and allow RM to open another Cinema close by. It is just not viable.

Very true! I just think the whole Seaway plan is ill conceived anyway and siting it away from the seafront area is much more sensible.

Let's build on the Seaway car park and see how many people want to go to central Southend late at night. All you read about is number of anti social behaviour occuring . Certainly would put me off visiting.

Indeed Ken, it's a ***** area anyway, who wants to be going to a cinema, or their kids going to a cinema on their own, with a red light district literally just yards away?!
