I am not sure that I merit a place in this community as I am no longer a “real” Southend United supporter.

I started supporting Southend when my father took me to see Southend v Southampton in the old 3rd Division South. This would have been in the 1956/57 season My father had previously taken me, a couple of times to Highbury, these visits were interesting and enjoyable but other than that, left me unmoved. My first visit to Roots Hall though really grabbed me and I was hooked from then until much later. We lost the game against Southampton, but this didn’t matter. I had always liked football but never before felt an association with any team. At school, I was then able, like the other kids, to have my own favourite team.

If there are any psychologists or psychiatrists within our ranks, they may be able to explain why we choose to follow lower league teams. I’m not really sure that I want to know the answer if there is one, it is sure to arise from some form of character defect. Anyway, my time supporting Southend has had more lows than highs but has always been fascinating and enjoyable. I think fans in our position, have to assume a sort of grudging acceptance of our fate. Yes, sure, we can dream, this is healthy. My dream was always that we would one day get as far as the Second Division, well, we did.

After what seemed like a lifetime of the above mentioned highs and lows I lost the compulsion to attend every home match and as many away games as I could manage. This was in 2007, which was the same year in which I managed to conquer my addiction to smoking. Was there a connection between the addictions to Southend United and nicotine? I would have been too young to smoke in 1956, so perhaps not.

These days I still take an interest in what is going on and probably manage to take in an average of 4 games per season. I hope you will let me stay, as these forums are a great way of keeping up to date with news.

I wish all of you many enjoyable years of supporting Southend and more than this I hope that in the future there will still be a Southend to support.

Hi there, welcome to the board, of course you're welcome - hey, there's people on here that don't even support Southend! :smiles:

Hi Shamash. Everyone who has an interest in Southend is welcome on here, and please don't think that attending 4 games a season is a blocker to participating on SZ. There are some on here that never attend live games so you're ahead of them already.

We look forward to your posts.
