7. Four Southend players have also played first class cricket - name them Terry Kent, Gordon Barker, Ducat and Stan Montgomery]

Terry Kent is lucky to be included having played just one game for us before joining Millwall where he played one less. Just 10 first class matches to his name as well; hope at least one was against Kent.

Andy Ducat is an interesting one. One of the few players to play for England in both sports. His time at Southend was attributed to be 1903-05 after which he joined Woolwich Arsenal. Now I thought the club came into being in 1906 ! He died youngish at the age of 56 suffering from a heart attack during a match at Lords, the only player in history to have died at Lords during a match - talk about unwanted records!

Stan Montgomery and Gordon Barker were proper all-rounders playing a good number of matches in both sports. Montgomery still holds a share of Glamorgan's record 5th wicket partnership of 264 (Essex's target to beat Glamorgan yesterday!) at Bournemouth.

I'm very surprised nobody else has remembered that a regular spin bowler for Essex, late 50's-early 60's,was Southend's reserve left back for a couple of seasons......Paddy Phelan.

Remember him as a cricketer, not least for his 10 wickets against Australia when Essex made them follow on and beat them at Southchurch Park! Also because Essex CCC did a short article about him when he died a couple of months ago.

The aforementioned Gordon Barker got a century in that match and the Essex team also included two decent footballers in Brian Taylor and Trevor Bailey and Ken Preston whose cricketing career was interrupted when he broke his leg playing football.

Really can't recall Phelan's efforts at left back for our reserves; never called up for first team duties.

He did score 28 goals in just over 40 games for Bishop Stortford not bad for a left back!
