Having received a 'sizable' offer from Scunthorpe for Rory McArdle the Bradford defender had seemed set to join City's League One rivals?
McArdle, also linked with Peterborough and play-off final tormentors Millwall, is still expected to complete a move to Scunthorpe but Southend are now seen as a strong rival for the Bradford defender.
According to the Telegraph & Argus, Bradford hoped to retain McArdle but Scunthorpe's contract offer will reportedly double his earnings at Valley Parade, where he's still got another year on his deal. Like Billy Clarke though, who joined Charlton a few days ago, he'll be on his way when back from a holiday in Cuba?
Scunthorpe boss Graham Alexander told BBC Radio Humberside, via the T&A: 'He does have other options but he's seen the potential in what we've got here and has obviously played against us as well on numerous occasions. We tick a lot of boxes for Rory and he certainly does for us. There's competition for all good players out there. Players of Rory's proven quality, you certainly have to go and speak to him and try to get him on board. I don't think either of us saw any problems on the football side of it, only positives. It's down to the deal getting done.'
The T&A report also said Clarke could be joined at Charlton by Bradford Player of the Year Mark Marshall, out-of-contract at Valley Parade but offer a new deal by City. The winger is thought to favour a return to South London, where he could be nearer to his London-based family.
Reporting Southend's interest in McArdle, the Southend Echo said Phil Brown's side have 'joined the race' to sign the Northern Ireland defender owing to the exit of one of their own central defenders.
McArdle, 30, could become the replacement for Adam Thompson, who left Southend for Bury.
