Neymar to PSG

He's now paid his release clause to La Liga, who have rejected it claiming it's come from PSG who are being financed by a state (Qatar) which is against FIFA rules. Will surely only delay a move.

Does anyone else see the irony of Barcelona and La Liga in general insisting of foreign clubs playing by the rules?

This tweet thread is very interesting on that exact topic:

198 mil !

You could buy 399 Ryan Leonards for that !

In fairness it would take that many Ryan Leonards to get near him:smile:

Fantastic player who will blossom now away from Messi and Suarez domination, though the fee is crazy, but you cannot blame him, new challenge, inflated wages and who knows the trophy he must desire so much the Worlds Best player at end of the season, not a chance whilst in the shadow of Messi and Suarez, of course there is a Real Madrid star who might make a fight of winning it

UTS

Yes I agree a new challenge is good for him but you'd think he'd want to dominate in one of the better leagues like Seria A, Bundersliga or the Premiership.

Surely you mean the Ligue 1 title?

I'm a little confused who has paid the release clause? Is it Neymar or PSG because SSN are saying Neymar and his representatives have paid the release clause.

It's something like Spanish football pretends that players buy themselves out of their contract at their buy out clause fee rather than the buying club paying it as per normal transfers.
so instead of Sheffield United offering us £500k they give Ryan Leonard £500k and he buys himself out of his contract then signs for the new club.

A bit like the speaker in Parliament is supposed to be unaware that political parties exist

Really? I honestly did not know that.... Makes sense though.

strange world is football. I was right: http://www.cityam.com/252013/recent-change-spains-tax-laws-could-make-buying-liga-manchester-united

"It is mandatory for clubs in Spain to include a cláusula de rescisión, or buyout clause, in the contract of every single player, enabling them — in theory — to pay off their contract should they want to leave.

In practice the clause is likely to be outside the affordability range of a player so potential suitors arrange to give the money to the player who will then pay their current club via the Spanish football association."

Is top-flight football really that alien to any other sector of the business world?

You can strip out the Neymar transfer as there are various geopolitical factors at play, but the recent escalation in transfer fees isn't really all that surprising. Manchester United turnover ~£500m each year, is it really beyond the pale for them to shell out £90m for what is essentially a core component of their business? You wouldn't look twice if, for instance, Nissan invested significantly in a piece of machinery which ensured they remained competitive in their field.

Been watching Neymar's debut game for PSG away at Guingamp on Canal + (0-9 at HT).Transmission cut out after 5 minutes for quarter of an hour.If that's the way Canal + treat their paying customer's it's poor,IMO,

Edit.0-3 to PSG in the 2nd half.Neymar got the 3rd.Think it'll be a good move for him.
