This will be our sixth visit to Shrewsbury's "new" ground and results thus far are LOST 2 DRAWN 2 WON 1. Would be nice to even that out.

The man in charge is one of the youngest referees on the Football League List, in his third season. The 31 year old Ross Joyce from Elston, just outside Middlesbrough, has progressed from the Teeside youth leagues remarkably quickly.

By profession, he is the Referees Development Officer for the North Riding FA. The number of League Officials who actually work for the various county FAs seems to have increased dramatically in recent years. Favourable treatment from assessors or job interviewers ? Possibly.

He has refereed Southend three times before. Firstly the 2-0 defeat at Bradford City 2015/16, when yellows were shown to O'Neill, Wordsworth and Timlin and one home player.

Then, rather more controversially, early last season for our hefty 4-0 defeat at Northampton when he sent off Demetriou for denying a less than obvious goal-scoring opportunity. The red card was subsequently rescinded. Also yellows for White and McLaughlin with none to the home players.

Finally towards the end of last season, on Good Friday, he oversaw the hefty 4-0 win at hapless Chesterfield. As you'd expect, no complaints there (other than from their manager) with a red card and three yellows to the home team and just a yellow to Atkinson for us.

His "job" enabled him to do a massive 44 games last season, which have produced an even more massive 182 yellows and a highish 12 reds (10 to away players). He must have just about the highest card count in the League and this season is no different with 43 yellows and a red from just 7 games. His last three matches have seen 31 cards !!!

Just before the start of his League career, he refereed the Conference Play Off final at Wembley in front of a crowd of over 47,000.

Assisting will be Matt Jones from Stafford who was with Ross Joyce at Chesterfield and Matthew Perry from Gloucester. Anthony Tankard from South Yorkshire will be carrying out Fourth Official duties.

So, to summarise;

3 games played with Ross Joyce officiating, no wins, no draws, 3 losses. 10 goals conceded, none scored.

oh well.. there's always Saturday... :cry:

NO !!! We won at Chesterfield (see above) - as did most teams last season and they've taken that form straight into League Two.

Clearly read that wrong, cheers Mick. I clearly have my Doom and Gloom goggles on... :blush:
