I think there's a pub at Oxford that sometimes sets up a tent and doesn't Oxford also have a bowling alley or something alongside the ground? Definitely Yeovil I'm thinking of though - it was shut the time I went due to it being quite windy!

Yeah I think you're right about Oxford, I have been to Yeovil and it was ****ing down so probably why there wasn't a tent on that occasion!

Memories for some of us veterans! I remember going to Yeovil in 1963 when we lost 1-0 to what was then a team in the Southern league. When we got off the train at Southend Central in the evening we passed queues outside the Odeon where people were hoping to get tickets for the Beatles gig.
In those days all matches kicked off at 3 on a Saturday, earlier if clubs didn't have floodlights-replays were often on a midweek afternoon -and Yeovil v Southend was the chosen match (only one!) for live national radio coverage on radio 2 or the light programme or whatever radio 5 was then! They knew we were going to lose!

I had a seat fourth row back - 12/6d - for the second house of The Beatles.
December 9, 1963 - heady days!

How big was the venue in those days?

I know a relative of mine went that night.

Hard to imagine a really huge band playing in the town nowadays.

Must have been quite something.

.
The Odeon was a large Cinema ( was to me anyway! ). Ticket Kiosk by the entrance, walk through the doors, up several steps to Foyer area. Hot Dogs, Popcorn etc available on right hand side. Continue walking to 'downstairs' seats, staircase at sides if you paid more & went 'upstairs'.
Also used to go to 'the Saturday morning pictures' there around 67-68.

That's exactly how I remember it.

That match kicked off at 2:15pm. Although they obviously had floodlights they were presumably rated of not sufficient quality for League opposition !

Cheers guys.

I always think of the old venue when I walk down the High Street. I'm pretty sure, in the 60's, the entrance was still on the High Street.

The original frontage is still there with the twin green domed rooves. Think it's where Barclays Bank is now?

Correct! The Beatles were last act out of a 'package' of four: Vernons Girls, Brook Brothers, Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers, were the others.
The Fab Four played for a little over 30 minutes, as was the case back in the day. They started with I Saw Her Standing There and finished with Twist and Shout.
The only reference from the band to Southend was when Paul McCartney said he was glad to be back in the town having played there earlier in another package.
Their sound system was six or so 30watt amps - each about the size of a biggish suitcase. Being so close, I heard the songs but others in the circle and at the back heard very little above the screams. There are pics of The Beatles in Southend online and a brief youtube reference.
Here's the kicker.
I had 2/4d and the programmes were 2/6d. One cost me £80 in the early 90s when it became available!

Cheers guys.

A High Street with a Barclays Bank? As outrageous as thinking Dan Matsazuka may get a game at CB:stunned:
